During the first Trump administration, I would make these mental top 10 lists of who the worst person was & it was always Stephen Miller… which is still true, but Hegseth, Musk and Katie Miller are catching up

New post by me on #MITPressReader @mitpress.bsky.social

On the 100th anniversary of the #ScopesMonkeyTrial
the ways we depict #evolution can still give an erroneous progressive view (that evolution leads to humans or ‘increased complexity’).

Long Pond in Acadia NP about an hour after sunset tonight, on the eve of a snowstorm. The light reflecting off of the waves in the foreground is actually moonlight, not the remnants of twilight in the distance.

Look at that textbook, U-shaped glacial trough. *chef kiss*

The same people who i used to fight with in the GOP, who wanted to withdraw American troops from everywhere, are now the ones justifying the murder of two survivors.

It’s almost like…. It was never about that

NEW: Remember that story we broke a few months ago with
@propublica.org @texastribune.org?

We reported Texas Gov. Greg Abbott did not want to release his office's emails with #Elon #Musk. Well, we have an update. www.kut.org/politics/202... #txlege #FOIA #transparency #Texas
Gov. Abbott released 1,400 pages of emails about Elon Musk. Most are blacked out.
Abbott fought for months to keep secret emails between his office and Elon Musk. Now, hundreds of pages have been released.

Loving the audio version of “Unabridged” this week.
The timing of #Kakistocracy ‘s etymology seemed a little too on the nose, though.
Love a good PIE reference, even if it’s 💩.

Someone better informed than I, please confirm that Congress must pass a veto-proof law co-signing the ICC’s Rome Statute before USA war criminals lose a minute of sleep.
Today, Russia & our #kakistocracy are kneecapping the ICC.

The Trump Administration’s new rule to lower wage rates for farmworker visas not only makes those migrants worse off, but reduces wages for American farmworkers. It’s the opposite of the “America First” slogan #mepolitics

I’m also glad that we now apply Maine’s minimum wage to farmworkers
Trump’s new H-2A wage rule will radically cut the wages of all farmworkers - and that appears to be the administration's explicit intention: New estimates from @benzipperer.org & me at @epi.org show farmworkers stand to lose $4.4 to $5.4 billion annually under DOL’s updated Adverse Effect Wage Rate

Since the mid-1980s, anyone doing informed Kitchen Table™️ math; who looked up the poverty line because it seemed they might approach it; or traveled to a place with a real social contact has known the American economy’s Big Lie.
Maybe another way to think of it is as the "participation line" - the income one needs to fully participate in expected aspects of US life without worrying about plunging into deprivation one way or another

(gift article)

An investor called $140,000 the new poverty line. Experts disagreed but said he had a point.
Michael Green’s tally of the costs of raising a family in the U.S. today is going viral, even if some economists scoff at his math.

"Experts disagreed but said he had a point" sounds an awful lot like "Experts don't want this to be true but can't gin up enough arguments to continue living in denial," doesn't it?
