Also, any kind of “rural is better than urban/farming is better than trade” argument has been about half a step from antisemitism for hundreds of years.
It stems from an imagined spiritual-biological link between land and nationhood. We see it clearly in the Athenian myth of autochthony, and it re-emerges in Romantic thought.
You can see some of these stereotypes - the simple, morally pure countryside vs. the morally compromised, inauthentic city - play out in Greek and Roman literature.
So this is a very old idea that recurs regularly.
