once you realize many electeds come into office with a) the genuine desire to do good but b) not a ton of policy experience across the breadth of their portfolio and c) a degraded institutional structure, it becomes clear how this creates an opening for the advocate with a white paper and a smile

One big takeaway from Mamdani bringing YIMBYs into his transition is that advocates can often gain a lot of power by

1.) having useful answers to questions and accurate information

2.) being reasonably polite and pleasant to elected officials

3.) understanding the actual mechanics of government

The end of society will be a dating app that has prediction markets fused in.

My take on the apps is 1. Women mostly don’t find static images of dudes attractive. It’s almost impossible to sell yourself on these things unless you’re clever and have good photos 2. The anonymity of it all encourages anti social behavior among men who get dates, making women even more cautious.
honestly unsure if contemporary dating or being single is worse

CBS is planning a series of ideologically diverse, non-partisan town halls treating questions like "How has feminism failed women?", "Why are liberals so smug?", and "What makes poor people so lazy?"

Most relatable US president

“I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth. Whether I shall ever be better I can not tell... To remain as I am is impossible; I must die or be better...”
Any contemporary of Lincoln describing his personality: His natural sagacity was matched only by his wit and good humor

Describing his appearance: The grotesque creature was made by the devil in hell. Also his suit didn't fit

The reason they're so focused on trans teens is that people who transition younger typically blend into society better. To the extent that they're willing to tolerate our existence in society at all, they'd rather we be easily identified by our appearance/voices/etc.
Cis people really have no idea how it feels to watch a regime hold a press conference to admit, on camera, the pogrom against trans people they've been waging for 11 months is not only real, but they're going to double down on genocide and try to wipe out all the children first.

I want to blow my brains out every time I meet someone who imagines this, it's insane! No, our ancestors did not eat better foods that were supposedly "organic" and local, even 100 years ago!
One curse of modernity is achieving levels of comfort and wealth never before known to humans such that our minds are free to imagine an earlier time when all our food was local and things were better, when "local food" was either onions and potatoes, or onions and mutton, or potatoes and mustard

sometimes i think about how california manages to be the world's fifth-largest economy and yet also a consistently dysfunctional and shambolic state government
This is what passes for progressivism and climate policy in California. Jane Kim’s answer for elevated fire risk and actuarial risk? Put it on the public dime. Urban renters should bail out well to do exurban property owners and landlords in fire zones. FAIR plan is already a ticking time bomb!

About 8.6% of California is developed land(not including farms). That number could probably go down to 8.5% and have a population of 100 million at an average population density of only 7543 people per square mile. The rest of the land can stay farmland @ 40% leaving over 50% of CA for conservation.
