Continues to amaze me that Trump can say whatever he wants and the media selectively filters it as either an authoritative declaration or just meaningless bluster depending on which interpretation best suits his administrations goals and virtually no other president has gotten this treatment

Now we can bond over the weird curves in all of our quality of life statistics that happen at a specific point in time. For us it is 1980, for the UK it is 2016.
Brexit has caused almost twice as much damage to the UK economy than estimated by official forecasts, according to new paper from a group of experts including a senior Bank of England economist

A friend of mine explained why some Democratic voters find Democratic elected officials so grating these days and why Republicans step on every rake: “Republicans don’t know how to be in the majority and Democrats don’t know how to be in the minority.”

The filibuster exists for one reason only and it’s to make the senate not work. Republicans understand this, and that’s why there are specific carve outs for their priorities (tax cuts that expire after 8 years, FedSoc nominees) and not for Democrats (a new regulation or program that helps people)
Underrated aspect of killing the filibuster is making pundit hacks at Cook Political p-p-p-piss their pants

Journalists have this trick I see a lot in longform articles and podcasts where they essentially tell a straightforward story backward to make the narrative more interesting and compelling. That might have been the intention here but really you should never do this when the story is about sex crimes
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

It doesn’t help the Democratic agenda but it does help individual moderate democrats take shelter from the politically treacherous task of governing
See, I told you. I TOLD YOU that the freaking filibuster is why the Democrats caved in and gave Republicans everything they wanted!

Democrats sold out the country for an institutional privilege that doesn't even help them.
Heaven forbid the Republicans get rid of the filibuster…

We used to be a proper country
TIL that a giant TERRIFYING ELEPHANT BUILDING used to dominate the Coney Island landscape in the late 1800s. It started as a hotel, very quickly became a brothel, and eventually burned down under mysterious circumstances. The dude who built it thought animal bldgs were the future of architecture.

In general it's useful to think about what the GOP would have done today if the shoe was on the other foot.

To be right wing on the internet in 2025 is just playing some deranged alternate reality game for internet points. I am 100% he doesn’t believe any of this, it’s just his entry in the game he and everyone around him are playing.

It’s really interesting watching the reviews trickle in all having to contend with the fact that the song about her finances penis is the catchiest song she’s written in half a decade. Some grudgingly admit it and others deny it a little too forcefully to be convincing.
my early thoughts on the new Taylor:
- her lyrical corniness is getting less endearing over time
- she doesn’t embrace the showgirl theme enough musically
- sabrina has her a little shook, and her attempts to imitate that style are rough
- as always, there are a few bops

Was reading this expecting something pithy and ironic but this is basically just… a literal description of what is going on lol
American elites: Clearly the electorate has issued a crushing and total reputation of liberalism. We have no choice but to honor the will of the volk and dismantle the republic.

American peasants: I voted for increased taxes on imports to make them cheaper but it made them more expensive instead :(
