Anyway. They spent the last decade telling us STEM degrees were the future and the Humanities were worthless then they spent hundreds of billions of dollars to build a glitchy Humanities robot.

OK, there is a reason. JD Vance is everything the Bible says a righteous man should be. No, really, I’m going somewhere with this.

if an AI slopfucker claiming AI coding is the best thing ever dismisses the METR study as too out of date, ask them where the new studies that directly measure coding time in a comparable manner are - and not studies that survey vibes.

I don’t want to hear anyone giving the “the problem is ILLEGAL immigration” lecture ever again. Or lecturing anyone who’s undocumented for not “following the law” when the government doesn’t.
Damned if you do; damned if you don't. The government spent months turning immigration court into a deportation trap.

More immigrants are not showing up for their mandatory immigration court hearings compared to prior years, an NPR analysis shows, allowing the government to order their immediate deportation. n.pr/4saLnem

Why would anyone risk themselves to go on 60 Minutes after this? How can viewers ever trust CBS News to report fairly on topics this White House is sensitive about?

AI likely to displace jobs, says Bank of England governor
Andrew Bailey says workers need to be trained to move into jobs that use AI, but adds it might not lead to mass unemployment.

i spent a lot of time talking to people who disagree with me. after having a certain number of guns and knives pulled on me and having a couple bones broken I decided conservatives aren't worth the trouble.
CNN has a show with a similar line. That the problem with this country is we just aren’t talking to each other.

It’s the kind of diagnosis that a toddler would land on.

People love pointing out all the things AI is bad at, but I look to the future. Tomorrow, we may discover brand new things that AI is bad at.

the tech industry was all about making computers better, smaller, and more connected. and they more or less finished that the last decade. they did a good job at it. and since then there's been this weird midlife crisis vibe from the industry that finished its purpose.

We should test Nate's hypothesis. Make sure N is high enough for a solid experiment.
Michael C. Rockefeller got shipwrecked in 1963, washed up on an island, and was promptly eaten by cannibals.

Let me make sure I got this. The President of Syria does not have control over an area, ISIS does, and also the President of Syria is ISIS. Correct?
The last time we saw the Syrian president was when he was in the Oval Office and Trump was spraying his Trump Fragrance cologne on him while they had a love fest.

Kernighan's Law, summarized, is that debugging code is twice as hard as writing the code. If your code is maximally clever, then you are not smart enough to debug it.

If LLMs make it 10x easier to write the code, but are not significantly more helpful at debugging, then this pit only gets deeper.

I do think this may be the last (computer) tech bubble. They've burned too much cash and goodwill on AI.

Not that bubbles will go away. They just won't be centered on Silicon Valley anymore.
This.

On a more general level the IT tech industry has completely lost the fucking plot on how it’s perceived and what it means to be productive.

IMO I saw this building back in grad school in the 2000s and 2010s.
I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*
December 10, 2025 at 7:32 PM
Absa-fucking-lutely. There's nothing wrong with AI research. There's everything wrong with how capitalism is using it.
Monday at work I had this great insight: the reason that publics are so opposed to AI is mostly because they are opposed to unregulated and arrogant financial capitalism. It's about the power relationships, and the imposition of that rubric and that arrogance into every part of our lives.

The PC as a commodity, modular platform with open hardware is dying. It was already beaten down with wild price hikes and GPU availability. Shortage of DRAM for a few years might be enough to kill it. You'll only be able to get computers as an integrated whole.
