How many school libraries have you worked in? How many LGBTQIA+ students have thanked you for stocking books that represent them? How many Black students have thanked you for putting up Black history and/or BLM book displays? Because for one of us in this conversation, the answer's not "zero."
Truth talk:

I have a hard time actually seeing how book banning in school libraries actually affects any person.

First, it's not like kids are lining up to rush into the school library every day for their media consumption. second these books are available in every public library, online, etc.

ICE isn’t welcome here. ICE shouldn’t exist. Every elected official must be clear-eyed about the fact that ICE is a threat to our entire country and must be abolished. As we in the Twin Cities know too well, our taxes are going to fund an entity that is attacking our neighbors; this has to end.

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

For people who think book banning isn't a big deal because even if they're not available in libraries and schools, you can still buy them--this is an elitist argument. Most kids ONLY have access to books from their library. Libraries ensure info access for all. Libraries are vital in democracies.
It's not a badge of honor when books get banned. It stinks for everyone. For the book creators, who worked hard to create something special that now won't be shared. The kids who miss out. The librarians and teachers who are treated like criminals. And taxpayers who have to pay for this nonsense.

What's happening with the Chicago Public Libraries right now is terrible. The proposed budget of the city would CUT 89 CPL positions. Importantly, 78 positions were lost LAST year. That would be 167 positions in 2 YEARS while COPS KEEP GETTING MORE MONEY. ENOUGH. SAY NO.
