#Speccy
I really liked the C64 tbf, (my cousin had one) just not as much as my beloved speccy. Getting the +2 on Christmas morning 1986 is a memory etched into my brain 🥰

Speccy games - well so sinclair or Kempston or cursor

Oh and you need to press Z to pick shit up

One of the big things I am glad of is having a hardware Speccy because fuck me...

C64 - is it in port 2? Right... We good

New gregs. It is all fucking happening over here. Took me over 3 years to find new frames I like because I am a fussy bitch as well as a speccy bitch

£260 is cheaper than back in the day, and probably also why the Speccy outsold it

Wow, Dun Darach (that means you were team Speccy! Yay!). It has a niche fame in Hungary, as the only ZX Spectrum Magazine ran an extensive and very enjoyably written playthrough of the game (also of Tir Na Nóg, Marsport and Heavy on the Magick). Still never played it, tho :-)

My first computer was a Spectrum but after a rainy afternoon gaming at a C64-owning friend's place I sold the Speccy, got a beige breadbin and never looked back.

Whenever I get a new laptop, first thing I do is install a 64 emulator so I know I can still play Boulderdash, Space Taxi, etc.

I suspect the Graun isn't allowing comments on this for fear of rekindling the age-old Speccy/C64 wars!

Commodore 64 Ultimate review – it’s like 1982 all over again!
Showing the value of great design over visual impact, this faithfully resurrected home computer seamlessly integrates modern tech with some wonderful additional touches

Yes I hope you don’t encounter that!! But while you’re in the region you can use a Speccy to simulate booking new flights.

Glorbian on the speccy was propper class

I don't recall seeing anyone complaining about the build quality of the Next.

But yeah, if you told a Speccy owner in 1985 that the version of their machine in 2026 would be the superior build quality one, they would not have believed you at all.

Yeah, as the old guard moved on to different mags. I played it for 20 minutes this morning. It's not a huge amount of fun. The hi-res "Speccy" element, indeed - I think what is interesting about that nowadays is the absolute marvel that is L'Abbaye des Morts, Musketeer and Sherwood. Great stuff.

Zzap liked it more as time went on, curiously. TBF it was pricey on C64 - tenner apparently - which probably didn't help reviews😅

One thing I didn't realise until looking up AWM though - I get the impression folks took a dim view of a fair few hi-res mode C64 games that were converted from Speccy?

It's like the endless comments we got on the NES video about how the game industry wasn't "saved" because video games were actually still going strong in the UK with classics for the Speccy like Blimby's Quest and Marko Goes on a Walkabout

Your world famous Speccy memory layout page was used in the development of this game 😆

We can see the graphist "Jones" signature on the bottom. Has the spectrum screen some signature too ? I wonder if it's the same artist who did the conversion ? Mark R. Jones also did Renegade, another CPC killer art game. Maybe he feels less confortable with the speccy.

It's unpatriotic to say but while I loved the spectrum it was not a great computer just built for a great price. I think of it more as a "peoples" computer, other better computers were all out of reach for many. We had the Vic 20 then Speccy 128 until my brother bought an ST :)

Tough call. I mean, if you saw a genuinely affordable one, then ofc, why not. But functionally they're a bit of a twilight zone. They're not *that* much better specced than a speccy. For UK me, with no direct history they're a curiosity rather than a must have.
January 12, 2026 at 9:28 PM
Does it include the 1984 Argus Press Software game for the Speccy (and C64, I think) ?

SPECCY 4 EYES!
January 12, 2026 at 5:48 PM
My 8 bits consisted of the Speccy, an XEGS (mostly shunned due to not having the right cable to save any programs I wrote) and the SMS.

My mate had an Amiga and I did spend a lot of time at his house tinkering with AMOS on it so comes in a close second.
January 12, 2026 at 11:38 AM
You'll get used to it and not see them, hopefully.🤞

I've been a full-time speccy for over 50 years, but seeing the frame on new ones is still hard to get used to.
