You don’t dream.
You sleep.

You don’t think.
You exist.

Got an artificial heart
and a hollow soul.
After all this time,
left with nothing
real to show.

They’ll make you feel like you’re asking
for too much
when basic necessities are out of reach

Nobody here
makes anything clear

Nobody here
shares our fears

We’re on our own again

Most of the stuff put on the web sucks and I can’t be bothered to waste my time on it. You lifting weights and reading good poetry triggers my interest. Keep it up.

Stumbled across this podcast episode today. I love Levine and this poem. Meitner’s close reading really adds to my appreciation of it. Also, shout out to the power of a great poetry anthology. The Poulin anthology she mentions, I found at a used bookstore in my hometown, struggling, post undergrad.
It is possible you maybe want to hear me talk about “What Work Is” by Philip Levine with Kevin Young over at the @newyorker.com poetry podcast? www.newyorker.com/podcast/poet...

I just listened to her reading her poetry in a new audiobook, "When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance," and it was wonderful. Such a deep, enigmatic soul. And very aware of her talent, and that she simply... had it.

As a life long John Le Carre fan and now a middle grade and YA comic book creator, I want to do a canon-accurate George Smiley graphic novel that’s just 200 pages of Smiley as a kid sitting reading German poets and then going to the library to take out more books of German poetry.

In 1972, a teenager sits among friends, speaking of Oregon woodland, shared land, and a future cabin with a piano and a desk, while Vietnam and the sixties hum nearby.

Seed catalogues pile up, sprouts crowd a windowsill, knees grind in rocky dirt. By September, apples sweeten and the deer leave bitten vines, a pail waiting at dawn.

I love every single bit of this. And I am sooooo going to enjoy reading these drafts.

I have some ideas in my head too about getting into writing more than my crap poetry on social media. It’s always been a dream for me to write a novel. Specifically….romance.

Your feedback is really touching - thank you. I wrote these during a very dark time in my life. Reading them now brings back bad memories but I have to remind myself they're all in the past and served for something good because the poetry came out of it.

Thanks again for compliments! 💜

🤣🤣🤣 Even worse than having to listen to a Vogon poetry reading or a root canal with no novocaine. Heck, it's probably worse than having a root canal with no novocaine WHILE being forced to listen to a Vogon reading poetry.

A friend of mine has been reading poetry to a family member in a coma. She's tired of the old white guy "classics" and asked me for some recommendations for contemporary poetry by non-white folks that's powerful and encouraging and not too sad/dark. This is not my area. Anyone have ideas?

The very act of reading a poem is a communion with the poet; by the time the poem has been read, the appeal has been answered.

I studied geography, but at tutorials my tutor would always start by asking which novels / poetry we'd been reading... didn't have to have anything to do with Marxist explanations of space...
