I have long believed that we should be WAY more vocal about how police and ICE constantly murder dogs, and I think this is great messaging actually.

The reality is that you can mobilize a whole lot of usually tuned-out Americans around a “someone is being mean to hecking doggos” cause.

“This heckin’ pupperino fucking hates La Migra,” to paraphrase from @weratedogs.com

This is Chop. He was shot and killed by masked assailants in plain clothes who go by ICE. They showed up at his door "looking for migrants after receiving a tip." The son of the family asked if they could wait before entering the home while he put Chop away in the bathroom, as the dog can be aggressive with strangers.
According to the family, it is at this point that the son went to his pickup truck to retrieve his ID and a Border Patrol agent entered the home, opened the bathroom door, and shot Chop. None of the agents helped the family, who desperately tried to render aid to Chop, as he bled to death on the kitchen floor. Unsurprisingly, the agent who shot their dog then hid from them and refused to give his name. Even more unsurprising, they did not find any evidence of the migrants they were there to terrorize in the first place.
Do not open your door for these fucking losers. Rest easy Chop

If you want a good giggle while learning a thing or two today...

Check out this thread from an actual Greek guy who is currently working on a podcast series about, well, Greek myths (do yourself a favour and give his Podyssey a listen afterwards too!)

This is great news. We've hired the classicist Spencer Klavan to teach at New College of Florida. Goodbye gender studies; hello, Greek literature.

My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

You know, I hadn't made the jump that his obsessing over the Peace Prize was because he thought it was literally his way to get into heaven.
redshiftsinger.bsky.social
Also he really thought winning a peace prize was his last chance to get in.

In other words, he knows he’s done great evil, even if he lacks adequate capacity for self-reflection to figure out what kind of real amends might start to rebalance the scales in his favor.

Did not know this about Old Bay
The origins of the company can be traced back to Wertheim, Germany, where Brunn started a wholesale spice and seasoning business selling to food industries, seeing an opportunity as spices were in especially short supply amidst hyperinflation in the aftermath of World War I. 9] Due to rising antisemitism as the Nazi Party rose to power, the company moved to Frankfurt, Germany; 1°1 however, on the night of November 9, 1938, a massive pogrom against Jews, known as Kristallnacht, led to Brunn being arrested by Nazi soldiers and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. "
According to Brunn's son, Gustav's wife paid a large sum of money to a lawyer for him to be released; as they had already applied for and received American visas, they were able to escape with their two children to New York City and later Baltimore, Maryland, where Brunn had family.!'! There, having brought with him only a small spice grinder, 8! Brunn founded the Baltimore Spice Company and produced the
"Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning", which was later renamed Old Bay. 12[13]

A little story about gender panic and the state of information before the internet.

I taped "Sweet Dreams" off the radio and spent an evening listening to it over and over trying to figure out if the singer was a man or a woman.

This is such a clever idea on taking kids to museums/galleries
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
Nadia from London has an idea that sounds such fun you'll be booking a day out asap.
"I've always loved museums," she says,
"but they can be overwhelming for children. For decades now, I've done something called 'playing postcards'
We do
the museum backwards, visiting the gift shop first. Each child gets to choose three postcards. Then they take it in turns to find that particular artwork in the museum and give us a little information about the piece from the details on the postcard, or from any gallery plaque. At the end of this treasure-hunt-style activity, we vote for our favourite in the cafe."

Ea-Nāşir's perfidy seems eternal!
Comic

Panel one. Stick finger singing, "Raindrops on rose/ And whiskers on kittens."

Panel two. Same stick figure holding pot and singing, "Bright copper kettles leave/ ...Flakes on my mittens!?"

Panel three. Same figure still holding pot and singing, "Hey, these are stone with a copper veneer!"

Fourth panel. Same stick figure has put down pot and is singing, "I've been bamboozled by Ea-Nāşir!"

So now the Administration are saying that the mass firing of CDC scientists, including many responsible for preventing outbreaks, was an “error” and many will be brought back.

Whether by intention or incompetence, dismantling public health will kill people.

Spooky season for #showmeyourknits? I have just the thing!

The Arachne Pullover 🕷️ is perfect for Halloween, but tbh I wear mine year-round bc I love it so much.

You can get the pattern on Ravelry and Payhip. It's size inclusive and worsted weight. And spooky!

A woman standing in front of a paneled wooden door. She has black hair going gray piled in a bun on the top of her head and is holding her arms, bent at the elbow, in front of her body, with her closed hands covering the lower part of her face. She is wearing a hand knit, oatmeal colored sweater with cable knit spiders from shoulder to wrist on both sleeves.

Her eyes are smiling.

That is bonkers but also, very structurally impressive. Obviously the snake(?) in the tree is incredible but let’s all have a moment for those root shoes, which are thoroughly delighting me.

Mr Laos. Just when you though this year was a bit quiet on the insanely huge, bedazzled, symbolic costumes along comes Mr Laos and blows everyone else out of the water. This is insane, but it's also *so* good.

I'll never forget the pitch of a (thankfully failed) startup I ran across years ago, that was basically "Don't you wish you could monetize your friendships? Now you can! Our new app and shitcoin makes it easy to keep track of the favors you do for one another, to cash in later!"

But now more than ever, fulfill your second civic responsibility: Serve on juries. Never has it been more imperative to thwart rogue injustice.
