Just in case I get like mowed down by a Tesla at the protest today and the media needs some topline bio info:

DirectFile, free covid tests via USPS, child tax credit: federal programs that worked and benefited ordinary people and therefore had to be ended in case everyone got used to it
It sucks because Direct File was one of the first times a lot of people ever had a positive experience using a government website or service.
IRS Direct File dies a sad, quick death after only a brief time among the living.

Why? It's not because it's a bad idea or that it didn't work.

It's because TurboTax's parent company spent decades trying to make sure they controlled the e-filing market:

the idea that it’s actually simple and trivial to guarantee life saving health treatment on a non emergency basis for all citizens is just obviously false, it is one of the biggest pieces of evidence in my mind for “people’s beliefs about what is true have no connection with physical reality”

i do think Dems should moderate on immigration in the sense that Dems should redesign our immigration policy to work like people think it works: you wait for a while (but not forever) to get into the country and then you wait for a while (but not forever) to become a citizen.

A President saying he will not obey the court order to release the SNAP funds he illegally withheld? This is dangerous. And it is the exact reason why we can't trust anything they say.

Ok well, “I’m not gonna” is not usually a thing you can tell a judge in response to an order
JUST IN: Unusual filing in Tish James case. DOJ says it isn't complying with judge's order to turn over discovery on selective prosecution issue. Usual procedure would be move to reconsider the order but prosecutors file 'notice' telling judge no. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

it's a Mexican standoff scenario where the moderates want us to throw down our guns in order to get some goodwill from the other side, when the other side have made it completely clear they would just execute us if we did that
part of the problem with the entire contours of 'dems need to moderate on [immigration/trans rights/healthcare]' meta-commentary is that dems need a negotiating partner to compromise with. the liberal coalition alone cannot bind this country together.
Chat, is it good when a meeting of low-level government supervisors has to pause to let one of them go get a quick cry done?
Okay, there's a Buick right in front of me with a window down so a dog can stick its head out and enjoy the crisp autumn air, but the window is… the driver's window?????

Some people waited in line up for 14 hours to receive a food box from a church giveaway.

500 people volunteered to help and they still ran out of food.

Remember for every one person a food bank feeds, SNAP feeds 9.

By turning off food assistance the regime is starving Americans.

More than 2,000 people waited in their cars in line Saturday morning in order to receive food.

"we can rip out the very marrow and heart of government as quick as we want, whenever we want, but if you make us turn any spigot back on that we don't want on, it's just gosh darn impossible, judge"
NEW: The Trump administration told a judge it will comply with an order to fund US food aid benefits for November during the government shutdown, but only at 50% of the amount eligible households would normally receive, and with a warning it could take weeks or months to implement buff.ly/nNJ5LJA
I guess this "debate" still continues, on fucking TikTok of all places bsky.app/profile/tali...
Let me give an example here.

A few weeks ago I came across a TikTok video by a diaspora creator talking about how "FGM" is dehumanizing language. "Call it excision and not mutilation, don't stigmatize the bodies of women who have experienced it!"

Here's the kicker.

I still don’t like the image or video genAI applications, but get a hobby people
This is an *amazing* level of derangement about generative AI.

We are headed for weird anti-AI purity movements where ppl turn on personal computing entirely and start LARPing as Dune mentats, because they think the magic fascism math is hiding in every transformer, search algorithm, and BART.

one of the most insane thing about partisan politics is that Republicans are allowed to say "these four million American citizens shouldn't get the representation they are entitled because it would be politically inconvenient for us" and nobody bats an eye
Johnson: "If they had no filibuster, they would pack the SCOTUS. You'd go from 9 to 17 or however many liberals they could pack. You would make DC & Puerto Rico into states, which would give 4 additional Democrat senators & make us a permanent minority. You'd see massive restrictions of 2A rights"

if there was a rich person with the will, you could build the most incredible news organization that has ever existed just from the wreckage of this year alone.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

well this is just stupid and awful, Teen Vogue has genuinely been one of the best sources of clear-eyed political news for years

infuriating to see talented people lose their jobs while right wing hacks fail ever upward across the media ecosystem

can someone make a supercut of johnson saying he doesn't know anything
Raju: Last week, you were very critical of Biden, you said he didn’t even know who was pardoning. On 60 minutes, Trump admitted not knowing he pardoned a crypto billionaire guilty of money laundering. Is that also concerning?

Johnson: I don’t know anything about it.

Everyone involved in this, including Trump, should be prosecuted for murder under the next administration.

Let him defend it with presidential immunity, and then take it back to SCOTUS after packing the court back into a real judicial body.
Awful: Pentagon officials told lawmakers Trump now claims authority to bomb people merely “affiliated” with “narco-terrorist" groups, Rep Adam Smith tells me. But under questioning, they wouldn't say what “affiliated” even means!

Lots of fresh info in my new piece:

I was on Twitter for 15 years and never got put on a weird list. I've been on this app for a year and I got put on multiple lists that feel abusive to me. I don't love this culture.
I kind of love that I could theoretically lord it over this woman. I moved to the DMV at the age of 23. By 29, I was married, mother to a gorgeous baby, & living in a house my husband owned.

And I'm a raging feminist. And so is my taekwondo black belt husband. 😘
This Washington Post article about MAGA people trying and failing to date in Washington is...really something

I realize we’re in a post-truth environment, but: I cannot understand how the fact that the platform run by Changpeng Zhao—the crypto billionaire recently pardoned by Trump—was serving to money-launder for Hamas, Al Qaeda, and ISIS, has not taken on greater salience.
