Agree with lots of this, especially this bit. I am really worried that a lack of left-leaning voices engaging with AI critically means we’re about to make all the same mistakes we made with algorithms all over again.

I say this often but as someone who’s been in K-12 education for 15 years, the speed of LGBTQ acceptance in high schools has felt dizzying, not only in terms of more students feeling safe coming out earlier but in terms of queer people being represented in more diverse social groups.
Being queer is weird because any possible year before the late 2000s SUCKED
"Clinton signed DOMA therefore the Democrats suck just as much as Republicans" yes but have you considered that in the '90s this country was so homophobic it was prepared to let guys get away with murder on the basis that another man had come onto them and DOMA had a veto-proof majority in congress?

Taking an anti-vaccination stances against a treatment that saves the life of ONE IN FIVE HUNDRED KIDS and has no verified deaths involving healthy recipients is not just anti-science and anti-logic, it's evil. I have studied this disease too extensively to soften that word.

In fact I stopped myself from commenting "you know this is made up" or similar on a Facebook post about this tale because I thought it would only fuel anti-vax sentiment!!
I think the real risk is how many people view this as propaganda and use this to support anti-vax arguments, like “oh they couldn’t find any real kids who died so they had to make it up”

Normally an almost self-consciously progressive place… but this stuff is cutting across political factions.
