I think this is what frustrates me the most about mask discourse: There's an acceptable middle ground of "wear one when you're sick" that both sides have decided is unacceptable despite being a reasonable position. I did it going to Walgreens yesterday, it's really not a big deal.

we were absolutely militant about masking. I love masks as a tool to prevent spreading illness and will happily put one on when I’m under the weather and need to be in public. the idea that we should all mask forever or until covid is “solved” (it’s endemic) is unserious. the vaccines are a miracle

The whining about Janet Mills jumping into the Maine Senate race is pretty hard to take. It's fine and healthy for our candidates to run in contested primaries. It's dangerous to simply nominate people by acclamation based on internet vibes. Mills isn't even bad, she's just extremely old.

Thinking fondly of all the pre-election fact-checks that said we couldn’t possibly know whether Republicans wanted to get rid of pre-existing condition protections.
• New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said that Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, "want to ... repeal the Affordable Care Act and elim nate protections for preexisting conditions." It's unclear what Trump would do, since he hasn't released a plan to replace the ACA. He said he would do so, if "we can come up With something that's better." Schumer, meanwhile, was wrong to
say, as he did on the Senate floor April 28, that the bill goes "back to the day when insurance companies could deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions." perorats and Republicans have made
competing claims on whether the latest version of the GOP health care bill maintains protections for people with preexisting medical conditions. President Trump has said, "Pre-existing conditions are in the bill. And I mandate it." Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer has said that
"insurance companies could deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions."
Neither of those comments quite gets it right. The latest version offers lesser protections than the Affordable Care Act, but it doesn't allow insurers to deny coverage to someone with a health Who's right? Like everything else in health care, it's complicated.

Multiple airports are now announcing they will refuse to play Kristi Noem’s government-funded video blaming “Democrats” for the government shutdown.

“We believe the Hatch Act clearly prohibits use of public assets for political purposes and messaging,” one airport said.

Arguably, Trump 2.0 is all about stochastic authoritarianism.

He lacks the ability to punish multiple cities with an iron fist. He can't even really punish all of ONE with an iron fist. ICE and associated unnamed Fed LEOs roam Chicago, but only strike a limited number of places at a time.

What Trump is doing is very bad. But I want to push back against some of the numbers here.

ICE did not hire 10,000 agents. It WANTS to. That it keeps running ads suggests it is struggling. And when it does, it seems to cannibalize local police, who don't like that.

More significantly:

"(Officers) refuse to recognize local or court authority. A judge says you can’t arrest journalists. Watch us. A judge says we have to wear badges. No. State law says we can’t drive around in unmarked vans? Too bad. Elected officials who want to see what is going on should prepare to be arrested."

I actually think Trump himself was also significantly more constrained in his first term. He actually acted like a politician who believed in certain political gravities and got rid of people who made things a clown show.

He's basically diminished significantly and become a golem of insecurity
unavaleable.bsky.social
yeah i don't think i ever appreciate how well constrained Trump was during his first term and how everyone kinda assumed that would happen again without putting in any of the work

The great thing about those costumes is their humor & nonviolence, of course.

But also, they *take up more space*. They make the crowds bigger. The visuals that create footage are important.

I never posted this here, but I made a pretty big write-up over on Tumblr for anyone interested in learning #pixelart!
It's a guide on software, fundamentals, jargon and resources.

Since links are legal on Bsky I can share it: www.tumblr.com/tofupixel/75...
#tutorial

Hope someone finds it useful!
A screenshot of a tumblr post reading:

"Title: So you want to learn pixel art?
Subtitle: Part 1 of ??? - The Basics!

Hello, my name is Tofu and I'm a professional pixel artist. I have been supporting myself with freelance pixel art since 2020, when I was let go from my job during the pandemic."

Two images comparing artistic improvement, the left is of a rudimentary tree, and the right is of a statue in a wall recess surrounded by plants and dappled light.

"My progress, from 2017 to 2024. IMO the only thing that really matters is time and effort, not some kind of natural talent for art.

This guide will not be comprehensive, as nobody should be expected to read allat. Instead I will lean heavily on my own experience, and share what worked for me, so take everything with a grain of salt. This is a guide, not a tutorial. Cheers!"

never say never, i guess, but neither ellison nor weiss have the kind of experience that should give anyone strong confidence that they’ll be able to even maintain CBS’ current viewership levels, let alone improve them. both have basically only ever run niche projects.

I think the counter argument to “Ellison and Weiss will turn CBS News into an unstoppable propaganda machine” is Bezos’s WaPo which lost basically all the talent and also is in a subscription death spiral

I really can’t imagine a more ideal scenario for anti-Trump politicians than MAGA spending a week explicitly turning the size of the 10/18 protests into a referendum on MAGA and Trump, while simultaneously making the protests the center of media attention. They are setting themselves up for disaster
