There's a certain irony in the right wing hijacking Pepe the frog as their mascot, and now frog costumed people standing up to fascists.

Lots of attention on this Marc Benioff article, which is excellent and full of jaw-dropping quotes.

It reminds me of how he was when I did a story for NPR about him secretly buying hundreds of acres of land in rural Hawaii. Things got weird.

What Thiel is saying about tax havens = what Altman is saying about copyright:

"I can't be rich unless you let me steal from you."

This is how Broligarchs differ from oligarchs of yore: the latter tried to hide their thievery; the Broligarchs trumpet their entitlement to steal as a natural right.

Mr Laos. Just when you though this year was a bit quiet on the insanely huge, bedazzled, symbolic costumes along comes Mr Laos and blows everyone else out of the water. This is insane, but it's also *so* good.

boy the tiktok ban has really turned out to be one of the most singularly stupid things ever passed, huh? as if these people needed more help controlling the entire information environment

what a shitshow

Trump said he deserved a cut for brokering the TikTok deal, and at once there was agreement that his son Baron would have a top executive slot... though he hasn't asked for it, and has no apparent qualifications to hold it. This is how Trump 2.0 works. www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2025...

It always looks silly from these guys but this basic logic where the most marginalized people are actually elites representing “the machine” is also the shared understanding people running newsrooms and universities believe as well.
dieworkwear.bsky.social
seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"

Marco De Jong helps shine further light on how intertwined NZ’s military is with the white supremacist military machine of the US, and how those links keep growing.

#nzpol Sometimes a policy is so stupid it makes you question the very fabric of reality. Decisions so fabulously, almost wantonly dumb, you wonder if we actually live in a simulation. Welcome to the world of removing Jobseeker Support for 18 & 19-year-olds. craigrenney.substack.com/p/a-small-wr...

The government’s recent changes to benefits feel like this: the house is on fire, and this policy is them turning off the smoke alarm and saying it’s fixed

"they are stealing your money and using it to fund their out-of-control thugs" is just a straightforwardly true description of what trump intends to do here
johnlk.bsky.social
This is the fucking Prussian constitutional crisis. If you let them fund the military without Congressional authorization you've just given up on constitutional government. Congress is a dead letter.

📚 'The Welcome of Strangers' reviewed on RNZ!

On RNZ’s Nine to Noon, historian Jonathan West described Atholl Anderson’s 'The Welcome of Strangers' as nothing short of a 'tour de force'.

Yo NZ media & sycophant wannabe ‘look at me I’m doing journalism’ & most of all dog whistling commentariat, repeat after me.

STV isn’t a leftist tool.

It just returned a RW conservative Otago Regional Council in a RW conservative rural area.

How you gonna explain this one, ya fucking muppets.

One final bit of good news - 234600 people across the motu voted to remove Māori wards, 245800 to keep them - 51.1% of all votes were to keep them, 48.9% not to. The majority of the country that voted were in favour so suck it coalition!

Same. I was a million miles from New York City, but I bought a suit jacket to try and look like Annie Hall, and I never stopped loving Diane Keaton. Properly sad she's gone ❤️
emilynussbaum.bsky.social
Oh man, I loved Diane Keaton— Annie Hall had such a huge influence on me as a teen, everything about her style & her energy, the clothes she wore & the way she talked! She just felt like such a model of New York City intellectual life, jittery & adventurous & original

It's not about institutional power. Obviously these trappings have always been in opposition to institutions, and institutions have reacted accordingly by withholding power in response. It's the power of being monstrous; inherent to the holder, and because it is not given, cannot be taken away.

As a fashion historian, I will die on this hill: the point of having blue hair and nose rings (or spiky nails or stripper heels or tattoos or an all-black wardrobe) is not to look pretty or cool. It's to look (and feel) powerful--something many young American women crave right now. And it's working.

You weren't even better off being a rich white baby born in 1850 than a black baby born today. Cornelius Vanderbilt II had seven kids. One got sick and died at 5. One died at 21yo from typhoid. One died at 37 aboard the Lusitania. One died at 45 from cirrhosis.
stephenwest.bsky.social
But you shouldn't be too surprised when they say stuff like this:

"You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today."
I don’t want to take any guidance at all from the secular society around us. And the reason I don’t is they killed 60 million babies. I don’t want to hear any more lectures from these people about slavery. You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today.
