I‘d say don’t write an article about autism if you can’t recognise one of the most notorious disability abuses of all time! the one where a kid got murdered ffs!!

came across one of those absolutely nothing-y autism articles in a German newspaper and it is illustrated with an image of facilitated communication AAAAAAAARGHHH
an article in German which is illustrated by a woman holding a boy’s arm over a letterboard, there are also some shitty ads along the side

i don’t think non-verbal / verbal are useful distinctions in autism even casually as some LD autistics can be highly verbal with severe semantic difficulty etc, when someone says “nonverbal” i just think they’re lacking experience around autistic people

it’s gross to see these practices, put it in a format they can understand or gtfo

my son would be classed nonverbal by this standard, he is bilingual and can sign to accommodate his friends who can’t hear, which is more than these fucking researchers can do!

nonspeaking / nonverbal are meaningless and researchers sometimes classify a whole room of people who can speak as “nonverbal” by asking them questions they don't understand (a standard by which everyone is nonverbal, i also could not answer a question i didn’t understand)
There is no consensus in the literature about how to define "nonspeaking," "nonverbal," or
"minimally verbal"42, particularly for individuals over 17 years of age. The spoken language abilities of participants ranged from a few word approximations to a limited number of utterances or
scripted phrases. Some participants could give verbal responses to highly practiced questions (e.g., "What's your name?"), but none could respond verbally to open-ended questions of the type they were asked in this study (e.g., "Have you ever experienced uncertainty?"). On the parent-report SCQ45, all but one participant was reported to be able to speak using short phrases or sentences (item 1), but none was reported to be able to have a "to and fro" spoken conversation involving turn-taking or building on what a conversational partner had said earlier (item 2).

#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." n.pr/3kVZvon
Black-and-white portrait photograph of an older man , darwin, with a long, full white beard and receding hairline, wearing a dark coat. He looks to the right in a serious, contemplative pose. A small piece of handwritten text in cursive ink on paper, difficult to read but appearing to say: “But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything.”

I’m honestly not sure what I mean, but that was one of the things that crossed my mind. also the that you can tell it to fuck off could cross over into interactions with the real person, iyswim? and how could a child discern interactions it had had between real and fake?

maybe it would be a handy stand in you can go 🖕 to without consequence, I dunno really

interested in what effect having a fake teacher would have on pupil relationship to the real person teacher it’s based on?

I’ve also had a young adhd adult whose mum died live with me for a bit & he was briefly in state care as a child when she was ill. adhd can have support needs too.
