Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

I think I’m just going to keep reading novellas through to the end of the year. I bought a bunch more off of eBay and am excited to get those in the mail. Kind of a weird mix here but they’re the ones I had already on my shelves.

Some people are very good at writing sex and some people are good at believing that they are good at writing sex, the first is a tremendously impressive skill and the second is what makes for deeply uncomfortable author presentations at science fiction conventions
There's nothing wrong with literary porn, but some of the crap those guys wrote was "Have you actuallly ever HAD sex?"

Maybe I'm missing an important point, but the Ford gov's claim that "Landlords will lower rents if they can rent out more of their properties now that we've given them more power over tenants" feels like something you'd say if you'd never literally never heard of capitalism before in your life.

Some of the responses to @peterbcounter.com’s post about writing and money have moved me; so many people are just scraping by. Writers deserve SO much more financial support, my god.

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.
