Oh hi it's me your pal Panic.

Strident literary feminist. Publishing desk job. Ran one marathon one time.

"Worryingly erotic." "Disagreeable, quite shouty." "Alienating, dangerous, and perverse."

Olbermann, determined not to be left out of the apparent “men who shouldn’t be volunteering such dubious information about their relationship with Olivia Nuzzi” contest, invites us all to do the math on how old a woman born in 1993 was when a man born in 1959 got to know her in 2011.

I truly thought I was so deeply, darkly cynical and yet all of this has exploded every low expectation I had. As it turns out, I did actually have a lot of faith in humankind. And they killed it.
No matter how long I live after we get through this dark chapter, I will never get over the immorality, the amorality, the corruption, the criminality and the cruelty in service to one of the worst humans to ever walk the earth.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I don't think Trump himself is smart enough to play this game and I don't know if they guys controlling him would have played this particular move but I think this is absolutely right in general.
Trump's performance, MTG's about face, Rogan questioning the Big Lie, it's protective ass-covering as we head into the midterms and beyond with an increasingly uneasy populace. It's a ruse. And the media will largely fall for it.

Loolllll what is even happening?
Huge victory for Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office. He stuck to his guns, spoke about affordability, proudly declared himself a Democratic Socialist, condemned genocide in Gaza, did not back down from calling Trump a “fascist,” and still got Trump to praise him, undermining months of GOP attacks.

Started Giovanni's Room today at lunch & am already halfway through. What a gorgeous book. Is it too facile to make Genet comparisons? Certainly I find in Baldwin more beauty & less vulgarity. More melancholy too. But it's the same 5am streets of Paris belonging to gangs of boys spilling from bars.

A neat way for fascists to get around you taking an interest in say, school board elections, is to just eliminate school boards. Ahem.
Beware, Canada. First the fascists come for the schools & local governments. Don't let the bastards get a foot in the door.

I'm about almost done and it really feels different than I thought it would. I was suspicious, thought "oh please don't ask me to care about some dude's awkward sexuality/relationships/masculinity crisis," especially given all we've been reading about men's sexuality in the past few days.

I was thinking about how for a long time social media made doing a thing about showing people that you are doing the thing and not about the thing at all. And therefore one spent less time enjoying the thing. Anyway, doing a thing later. I'll have fun probably.

I will instead tell you what's on my coffee table now: a collection of Arthur Machen newspaper pieces, which are sort of like if Andy Rooney was nostalgic for Dickensian London & three issues of the London Review of Books, all of which arrived at once because the postal strike.
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

Any conversation about return to office vs work from home that does not acknowledge the ongoing pandemic is ignorant, ableist and destined to miss the mark.
Many, including disabled people but not only disabled know they cannot risk getting COVID and offices haven’t taken steps to protect workers.

In defining rape in law and public discourse, Catharine MacKinnon wrote, "The level of acceptable force is adjudicated starting just above the level set by what is seen as normal male sexual behavior, including the normal level of force, rather than at the victim's, or women's, point of violation."

What the Epstein files show is the *solidarity* of many men-across class, race, religion, profession & party affiliation-in the global political project of keeping the boot on women's necks.

People have no problem understanding class solidarity among the rich. Why can't they see gender solidarity?
Like I dunno, maybe the reason it took a lady to break open the story of all the men protecting the dude trafficking underage girls is because the male journos were all emailing him making jokes about it?
