So. Since I've been talking about people picking lanes and working in them, I'm going to pin a list of mine - the skills I have, the topics I generally know enough about to be actually useful in the Current Situation, etc.

Also, I am open to being reached out to about any of these things!
Great thread, up and down.

This particular bit reminds me of my beloved SCA chirurgeon mentor, who would often threaten to bring people back from the brink in the most painful ways possible as punishment for their dumbassery.
“They lost their composure and would not listen to any advice being given to them,” Fish and Game officials wrote in a press release.

Gonna lose my composure and put my boot to their asses.

Important point.
Also, again, a reminder that "AI" is such a broad and useless marketing term that it's almost entirely useless. I can't say I will never use "AI" because it covers so much programming ground, including ground previously not under its umbrella. I can say what creative things I won't use it *for.*

Similarly I remember research about men perceiving a group that is 1/6 women as “balanced” and 1/3 women as overrepresenting women.
There's really interesting social science on how white people significantly overestimate the number of people of color in a room or in a picture. A room with, like, 20% POC will be perceived as majority POC.
White men are 30% of the US and if they look around the room and see it’s less than 90% white men they think it’s affirmative action.

YOU DUMB FUCKS. THIS IS ME.

I have a scooter. I can walk. I can't, however, walk through 80 miles of airport. I can walk onto an airplane or through hallways. I can't walk the .5 mile to the convention center.

People, get smarter, it's embarrassing at this point.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

The issue is not that we don't talk to each other. It's that some people think that "talking" means getting to debate your existence, and that's abusive and controlling.
CNN has a show with a similar line. That the problem with this country is we just aren’t talking to each other.

It’s the kind of diagnosis that a toddler would land on.

All of Dar Williams' Iowa really, but especially this part:

For tonight I went running through the screen doors of discretion
For I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see
You were a-wandering out on the hills of Iowa
And you were not thinking of me
Name your fav song lyric.

Denying infants a safe and effective Hepatitis B vaccine at birth in Guinea-Bissau, where ~19% of adults are currently infected with Hepatitis B, is akin to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study where black men with syphilis were deliberately left untreated to study the natural progression of disease.

The last time this was an issue?

Because the bus company kept canceling due to sick bus drivers and it was just easier to take kid to school consistently rather than deal with the random last minute cancellations that were happening several times a month, more than once a week on average.
Why the fuck is everybody dropping off their kid at school personally like a little chauffeur? Put them on the fucking bus, you're not a fuckin driver. You're not a fucking slave.

I also feel like his body of work really disproves the persistent claim that joyful, hopeful, funny, romantic or lighthearted stories are inherently intellectually lesser and can't be Real Art
Taking a break from the sickening tragedy to focus on the beauty for a moment. Rob Reiner achieved something so rare and coveted that artists and entertainers dream of and rarely achieve: cultural permanence. How many times have you made a reference to something going to 11? Shouted "Inconceivable"?

OP realized it later but if you add This Is Spinal Tap, Rob Reiner also made arguably the best mockumentary of all time and this was all over an eight year period
Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.
