This episode had so much going on, but somehow I was most shocked by so much smoking cigarettes indoors
Tonight's episode of INDUSTRY had at least three gasp-out-loud moments. This show is disgusting, and the best thing on TV.

Bc a lot of those (mainly white) folks don't hate the machine. They hate it being pointed at them. They want the police. They want ICE. But not this version of it. It's not abolish they fear. It's the idea behind it. Losing their way to control and punish the "others".
Question for the crowd:

Why do you think moderates, liberals, and other folks are scared or have an aversion to the word “abolish”?

Got to hear the back end of Wayne Shorter & Milton Nascimento's 'Native Dancer' and the first half of Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and Light' in possibly the best space to hear these things, so I'm pretty happy about my Saturday afternoon.

Young replies: ""Well, I don't know, Martin. It's not the entire system. It's only part of it, and I think we can fix that."

King's reply begins: "I don't need to hear from you, Andy," he said. "I've heard enough from you. You're a capitalist, and I'm not."

The two most powerful forces in America have always been money and racism.

They literally built this country via slavery, and it’s the reason why white people keep voting against their own interest against the corporations (because white folks are terrified of black folks getting a “free ride”)
To add to this, almost all of the U.S.’s problems are linked to its hatred of Black people and that it hates Black people more than it loves anyone else. Our laws and policies are largely based on making sure Black people (and sometimes other groups) don’t benefit even at the expense of others.
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

Was having a kind of a bummer day but then I heard a Freddie Hubbard song on the radio that lifted my spirits a bit. Though I also played said song on the radio, so I'm not sure if the effect entirely counts.

Why are some of us still having to explain "separate but equal" to folks while getting too many "well, give them the benefit of the doubt"s in return?

Don't worry. I know why.

The Death Star analogy isn't perfect and was not meant to imply everyone has the choice to just leave whenever they want. The point with the Death Star analogy is that if you are on Alderaan, what you see is a Death Star

it’s also not surprising that massive amounts of people showing up to rally isn’t leading to any sort of change because there’s no theory of change behind those rallies other than “if a lot of people show up it’ll show that a lot of people care about this” and that’s… kind of nothing?

I further put forward that we be allowed to be a little bit rude about it. look what the obsession with civility has gotten us. if a person is being hateful or saying something untrue, you should be allowed to get a little bitchy if you need to!
my plan to get this country back on track consists of one bullet point: i propose we stop pretending stupid people arent stupid just because theyre loud and theres a lot of them
