Archaeologist (as a living, not a personality). Philadelphian and proud of it (aren’t we all?) Mostly a reply guy (complimentary), also post about music and Philly sports. He/him/his.
I was really excited when I saw that Sugar is playing Union Transfer but I just saw tickets are 73 bucks and you can fuck alllllllll the way off with that bullshit.

Now that I’ve paid tribute to the late great Katherine O’Hara, it’s time to resume John’s drunken rewatch of wuxia classics. More Jet Li, from Fong Sai-Yuk to Wong Fei-Hong and the Once Upon a Time in China series.

This just came on during my watch of A Mighty Wind (on YouTube) and it made me sob. It’s a legitimately excellent song, and of course Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara fucking crush it.
one of my favorites… it takes on a different meaning now in a way. thanks, Catherine O’Hara.

With all the arrests, re-upping my piece on how the church protesters are in the right — and this church is worse than you imagine.
I looked into Cities Church, which was protested for having an ICE agent as a pastor.

You already thought they were right-wing. But they're far worse than you thought.

They're ground zero for the "empathy is a sin" idea, among others.

Profane Existence was a prominent anarchist punk/hardcore collective in Minneapolis in the 80s and 90s. Record label, zine, helped publish the first Book Your Own Fucking Life book which had a huge list of DIY venues and punk collectives.
"I've got kids, I'm out here for them...The only way we can do this is through this kind of collective action. This is what punk rock trained us for!" -Protester tells Tina-Desiree Berg at the Minneapolis general strike march against ICE

You could imagine similar situations in which members of the media coordinated in solidarity around Lemon to direct sustained negative attention to Trump over this story. Instead the political press spent the earlier part of the week making up a fake story ("new tone") to help Trump.
This isn’t about convicting Don Lemon. It’s unlikely that will happen. It’s about intimidating journalists & making them censure themselves out of fear of consequences. It’s about eroding the free press because the administration can’t afford the criticism.
This just in: "Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards," Lemon's attorney Abbe Lowell says.

When they say the US is a Christian nation, they don't mean they follow Christ in any meaningful way (or that it's necessary). They mean God has blessed them materially and that anything detracting from that (immigration, taxes) is an affront to God's will.

Every time I see commercials for like laundry scent booster and shit like Febreze (which I am crazy allergic to), I think about how we’ve developed this concept of smelling “clean” and I have to assume there is an anthropological examination of how “clean” is/has been defined.

Bill Cosby. I grew up on Fat Albert and his comedy albums (had some mostly memorized). Huge fan of the Cosby Show. I sort of knew the whispers but it was convenient to not listen to them. But once it all came out, I threw everything I owned away and won’t watch or listen to any of his work.
Question for the Skyline: What was your HARDEST "cancel"?? Like the actor/singer/athlete that was the hardest to drop.

I feel like it's always people I don't fw getting canceled so it's never really a loss.

The hardest one was maybe TI because I actually liked multiple albums by him.

Dan McQuade was a real blogger and journalist in the best meanings of both terms, with an eye for the uncanny and a strident curiosity that all his peers and readers admired. He was also a true blue son of Philly, the peculiar city he loved very much and helped explain better than anyone else.

For any elected official who needs to hear this, I impart a lesson learned from the NFL:

When the other team is tired and on the back foot, you don’t call a timeout so they can catch their breath. You grind their fucking face into the dirt until the final whistle blows and you’ve won the game.
