One of the most fucking infuriating things about the United States, and I say this as an American, is the sick belief that American lives are somehow more special than others, that people in other places are mere apparitions.

They killed 80 people who never did a damn thing to anyone here.

A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

Colin Hortman: "My father and mother, Mark and Melissa Hortman, and their dog Gilbert, were killed by a man who believed conspiracy theories and fake news. Words matter. Sharing fake news is dangerous. "One part of my grief journey has been understanding the last conversation with my mother. She loved her job. People respected her job and what she did at her job. "When I called her after the legislative session ended, I asked why she voted for the bill mentioned in the video shared by President Trump, and she wept. That bill and her vote had nothing to do with fraud. She voted for that bill because it was the only way to avoid a government shutdown. She had seen the impact of shutdowns: people lose their health care, their jobs, and in some cases, from a story she told me, have taken their own lives. "She was in a very tough position on that vote. She had never really voted against her conscience like that. It was emotional and extremely difficult. Her struggle with that vote makes this conspiracy all the more painful for me. "I am asking President Trump to remove the video that he shared and apologize to me and my family for posting this misinformation and for using my mother's own words to dishonor her memory.” Sophie Hortman: "The video shared by President Donald Trump on Truth Social is a painful, false twisting of my mother's final vote. "The vote she made was incredibly difficult for my mother; it was not a vote made lightly or with malice in her heart. She made the decision to prevent a government shutdown because she believed our great state protects and helps Minnesotans. "We must create a society in which we do not harbor hatred and violence toward our political opponents, and this video promotes a false narrative which fuels the flames of political division. "The video being shared by the president is another hurdle our family must overcome in grieving the loss of my parents, Mark and Melissa, and their beloved Gilbert. I ask President Trump to please consider the pain and sadness we have faced, and to honor the spirit of the holidays we have just spent without our parents by taking down the post on Truth Social." -30-

This Iranian uprising is different to previous ones. It’s underpinned by a catastrophic economic situation that the government is incapable of solving. Food prices have risen by 70% in a year. Inflation is at 40% and rising. The currency is at its lowest level. People are finding it hard to live.

Democrats yesterday won the final special election of 2025, in Iowa: Their nominee defended a state Senate district by 43%. Harris had won it by 17% last year.

This win means Dems prevent the GOP from gaining a supermajority; the GOP lost the supermajority earlier this year.

Yup. A private school in NYC shut down for a few days because so many of their students were sick. The strain making people sick has mutated away from the strain contained in the vaccine, but the vaccine should keep you from getting very ill, even if you get the flu. Not too late to get the jab!

The Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY is facing foreclosure by December 31st. The Paleontological Research Institution needs to raise $1 million or their collection of 7-10 million fossils — one of the largest in North America — gets scattered across the country. This includes world-renowned Burgess Shale specimens, the most complete eurypterid ever found, and the Hyde Park Mastodon. Many fossils came from sites that are now paved over and can never be collected again. The NYT just covered their fight for survival. If you've ever visited or care about preserving paleontological research, they're accepting donations of any size.

THIS is what makes my head spin: The president is not a moral figure in any idiom, any land, any culture, any subculture. I'm not talking about the liberal enlightenment that would make him want the country to take care of the poor and sick. I mean he has no Republican values either. He has no honor among thieves, no cosa nostra loyalty, no Southern code against cheating or lying, none of the openness of New York, rectitude of Boston, expressiveness and kindness of California, no evangelical family values, no Protestant work ethic. No Catholic moral seriousness, no sense of contrition or gratitude. No Jewish moral and intellectual precision, sense of history. He doesn't care about the life of the mind OR the life of the senses. He is not mandarin, not committed to inquiry or justice, not hospitable. He is not proper. He is not a bon vivant who loves to eat, drink, laugh. There's nothing he would die for - not American values, obviously, but not the land of Russia or his wife or young son. He has some hollow success creeds from Norman Vincent Peale, but Peale was obsessed with fair-dealing and a Presbyterian pastor; Trump has no fairness or piety. He's not sentimental; no affection for dogs or babies. No love for mothers, "the common man"" veterans. He has no sense of military valor, and is openly a coward about war. He would have sorely lacked the pagan beauty and capacity to fight required in ancient Greece. He doesn't care about his wife or wives; he is a philanderer but he's not a romantic hero with great love for women and sex. He commands loyalty and labor from his children not because he loves them, even; he seems almost to hate them — and if one of them slipped it would be terrifying. He does no philanthropy. He doesn't - in a more secular key - even seem to have a sense of his enlightened self-interest enough to shake Angela Merkel's hand. Doesn't even affect a love for the arts, like most rich New Yorkers. He doesn't live and die by aesthetics and health practices like some fascists; he's very ugly and barely mammalian. Am I missing an obscure moral system to which he so much as nods? Also are there other people, living or dead, like him?
