Watching the world burn at 200 Megahertz.

a 1999 artificial life pet watching the crumbles, wondering how long until the power goes out for the computer I live on, and getting annoyed at AIbros tarnishing the good name of neural nets.

The worst thing about burnout for me is that at times my reading comprehension takes a big steaming shit and it can be hard to tell when it's happening.

Take this as an apology in advance if I am uncharitable with you in a stupid way.

Genuinely if we don’t abolish ICE I don’t see any way to not become the Julio-Claudia Praetorian Guard, where a lawless rent-seeking paramilitary acts as a continual anchor on the stability and continuity of the state.

I remember the phrase "they can't be allowed to melt back into society" re: the de-Baathification of Iraq after the war there. Like everything about that experience, the attempt was cynical, stupid, and botched. But there really should be a plan about what we do with guys like these in the future.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

One of the most insufferable things is when people go "uh excuse me ICE AREN'T cops," like no actually they are the quintessence of cops. They are pure concentrated cop, 100% by volume

OK, I’ve had it with anyone claiming AI doesn’t have a monstrous carbon footprint. The early alarmists underestimated impact l. This level of build-out far outpaces any other power needs by orders of magnitude.
As @paulkedrosky.com has written, as a % of GDP, spending on AI infra has already exceeded spending on telecom and internet infrastructure from the dot-com boom—and it’s still growing.

A government with teeth would make any and all kinds of price gouging illegal and make companies fundamentally terrified of raising prices significantly without a documented and transparent explanation, and even then! Instead companies can charge whatever they want forever.

There is a genuine sadness to this era of tech. This IS the Rot Economy, and what you get when growth is all that matters. Every person defending LLMs is ultimately defending growth itself. It’s not about technology and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s about more things to sell and develop for.

For the same reason I can dislike art when I find out the employees were overworked and underpaid.

Because I care about people.

I really don't like systems that force libraries to pay-per-use and I wish libraries themselves were more upfront with users about how much every movie you take out from Hoopla or Kanopy is costing the library.

At a city council meeting about an AI data center going up in my community. It's packed and people are furious. Calling the mayor and council members corrupt. Loud applause for open socialists and anarchists. Naked anti-capitalist rhetoric. Most folks here didn't even know about it until weeks ago.

Daily reminder that the underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth.
Anyway, AI has already stolen friends’ work, and is going to put other people out of work.

I do not think a political party that claims to be the party of workers in this country should be using it. Even for just a silly joke.

That makes them gullible, and unable to handle the current crisis.

its also, even years ago, had people falsey arrested because it saw someone look vaguely similar to another person as being 100% that person, even if they had two different heights, DOBs, last names, and both had valid IDs, the cop falsely arrested the guy. Who did literally nothing wrong but Exist
In the past week, I've seen stories of AI:
- being used by middle schoolers to make porn of other students
- calling innocent people sex offenders
- shutting down highways with busted-ass self-driving cars
- emitting more CO2 than New York City

What the fuck are we even doing?
New from me: The storied fiddler Ashley MacIsaac wanted to play a show at a Nova Scotia First Nation. It got cancelled because Google's AI search summary incorrectly called him a sex offender. Now he's worried for his safety www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/arti...

Just don't. The idea that Copilot or ChatGPT are suddenly essential tools is just buying into the corporate ad blitz.

Games were made just fine (well, relatively) up through...what, 2023? 2024? They didn't suddenly become VITAL for budgets or design docs in the last 2-3 years.

Everyone involved in deciding to use an ai avatar in court should lose their fucking licenses to practice law and anything else

The hell is wrong with you
This year marked the first time the AI avatar of a victim—in this case, a dead man—has ever addressed a court, and it raises many questions about the use of this type of technology in future court proceedings.

I feel like this is neccessary to point out again and keep saying. We *can't* tell if you're lying once your caught using GenAI if you were caught using it. The barrel's already rotten at that point. It doesn't matter how good your end product was the use of it at all rotted everything to the core.
The thing about using AI in your projects is we can never know *how much* you truly used if you obfuscate it at all tbh, and it spoils the bunch like the rotten apple it is. Doesn’t matter if you say you “just used it as a placeholder once,” it’s too easy for you to have not done it again.

The confusion and conflation of ‘generative ai that is built on stolen artwork’ and ‘machine learning, character behaviour modelling and proc gen’ is intentional on the part of the grifters peddling the former. They benefit from murkiness of classification, because the latter predates their bollocks
