Whelp, I finally did it. Logged into the Dead Bird, cleared out left the few remaining chats & DMs, and deactivated my account. SixPersistsBlue, my handle of old, is no more.

Why now, when I haven't logged on in months or posted in even longer? Dunno. Just felt right.
I have fallen out of touch with all the people I knew in highschool. Some quickly, some after years, one after a couple of decades.

The partner, on the other hand, regularly plays DnD online with five of his highschool buddies.

I suspect "common" is somewhere in between.
watching John Green talk about his buddy from high school who is still his friend and I’m curious, is that common for people on here?

The bathrobe lady was a journalist!
Earlier this week, a photo of a woman in a bathrobe filming ICE operations in St. Paul, Minnesota, went a little viral. That person was @mprnews.org reporter Sam Stroozas, who left her house without changing out of a sense of duty and urgency. The network leaned into it. More:

What the young person in the brown sweatshirt recognizes is that some views are, in and of themselves, violent. Such as the support of a secret police that kidnaps, murders, and tortures.
there’s a longer version here in which our hero follows up by telling him “you can go peacefully fuck yourself” after he claims to be “peacefully standing for my beliefs”

it's hard to process this level of cruelty to children
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

On one hand, that is some garbage framing.

On the other hand, "Democrats refused to fund the DHS" makes me feel a lot better about some Democrats being up to the needs of this moment.
Note the framing here:

It’s “Democrats have refused to fund” DHS and not “Republicans refused to prohibit face masks” or “the two parties could not agree on how to reform the agency.”

The $38.3 billion they are going to spend for interment camps could fund the annual budget of NASA, the EPA, and all clean energy R&D at the Department of Energy—combined.
Breaking news: ICE expects to spend $38.3 billion on its plan to acquire warehouses across the U.S. and retrofit them into immigrant detention centers that can hold tens of thousands of people, according to agency documents.

Hi friends,

As many of you know, ICE is operating in ways that tear families apart, enter homes without warrants, and traumatize innocent people. This is not law enforcement — this is terror and an abuse of power.

Yeah, any building that's already derelict is already going to be too expensive for most people to rehab. Older buildings are beautiful but if they're not maintained they decline quickly, no matter how solidly they were built originally.
OMCA's facilities director (who is responsible for a notably experimental concrete building that is now ~60) is my occasional carpool buddy.

Invariably any "that derelict building is beautiful, it would be lovely to rehab" is followed by him brutally crushing my idle dreams with likely realities.

Still insane to me that the GOP can gin up a moral panic about innocuous things like drag queen story time while we know Democrats would be eviscerated in the press if they ever started asking what the deal is with youth pastors getting arrested every week.

The things
held dear
are not
necessarily
a choice we
remember.
They can
sometimes
catch us
unaware,
sneaking
into hearts
while our
attention
is occupied
by living.
They go
unnoticed
until the day
we stand
risking loss
and find
ourselves
fighting to
keep them.

"No?"

"Or youth?"

"Er... No?"

"Is being royal or nobility a must?"

The dragon hesitated. "It's traditional..."

"Okay."
