Looking for another 25-35 responses from PCOS patients to give this student at least 50 to analyze in their honors research. We've had no luck with physician/provider responses, it may be too tough out there in 2025, but the patient responses are interesting. #MedSky

Just want to note that the Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins (pictured in the linked article) was confirmed 72-28. 18 Democratic Senators voted to confirm her, despite the fact that Rollins headed the America First Policy Institute, a group whose whole goal was to create the policy to enact Project 2025.

And I'm not saying that all kids will respond to that incentive, but I think for some fields that have life or death stakes to their work, and high risks, they need to know that not knowing their shit is often a literal death sentence for someone else.

In describing the killing spree at sea, if people want to invoke an international crime, the former prosecutor for the ICC has offered a more accurate term than "war crime" (there is no war).

To many legal experts, Trump’s boat strikes are patently unlawful. A range of former U.S. government lawyers, both civilian and military, who have advised on the use of force have publicly characterized the strikes as unlawful killings under both domestic and international law. The call may also be coming from inside the house. According to NBC News, the top lawyer at the U.S. Southern Command, the combatant command responsible for the region in which the strikes are occurring, warned in August that the maritime attacks could amount to extrajudicial killings and therefore result in legal exposure for the U.S. military personnel involved. In addition, Admiral Alvin Holsey, the officer in charge of U.S. Southern Command, announced after the bombing campaign began that he was leaving the position, a decision linked by The New York Times to Holsey having “raised concerns about the mission.” International experts—including scholars, UN special rapporteurs, and the UN human rights chief—have also denounced the attacks as illegal, with some labeling the strikes as extrajudicial killings. A former chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court even characterized the strikes as a crime against humanity—a grave offense involving widespread or systematic attacks on civilians. Close U.S. allies and partners also view the strikes as illegal. The French foreign minister, for instance, announced ahead of the recent G-7 foreign ministers’ meeting that U.S. military operations in the Caribbean “violate international law.” And according to reporting in CNN in early November, the United Kingdom has restricted intelligence sharing with the United States because it regards the maritime strikes as unlawful and seeks to avoid complicity, a decision of particular significance given the historically close military and intelligence relationship between the two countries. Had our first graduate thesis defense of the academic year here at Duke - for Yueqi Chen's absolutely lyrical ethnography on nurses' aides working in public hospitals in Hunan, China.

Sharing, with permission, a beautiful passage from Yueqi's thesis which I found really moving:

Stories are there, but they float, and only when one begins to listen, ask, and pay attention do they land. In an era governed by the tyranny of speed, stories are always afloat because few actually care about others’ stories, and the excuse is that they don’t have time. We are governed by speed because we allow speed to govern us. The cab driver’s father-in-law’s frostbites, just like nursing assistants’ body aches, are inconsequential for us and this world but are significant for them. They embody not only the pain of their bodies but the pain of this era. Their bodies become where pain clings to so that fewer others will need to experience pain. I’d like to invite my readers to slow down, even just a little bit, and to care for others’ stories, especially the bodily ones. Ethnography has an unforgiving quality to it because when you see people in the field, you can’t unsee them; when you hear someone’s stories, you can’t unhear them. Ethnography can never be tidy because it’s so close to an ever-messy, changing, and vibrant being that is life. To try to smooth out the ethnography is equivalent to leaving out the “unpretty” people and corners. I slowed down when faced with such “unprettiness” – I dwelled on it. The HBV vaccine is up there with the Vitamin K shot for protecting babies. It does the job extremely well, and at infinitesimal risk. It is one of the literal miracles of modern medicine.

The Next One Here's what's going to happen next. Somewhere, right now, a trans person is teaching a class, or coaching a team, or working at a library, or providing healthcare. They're doing their job. They're probably good at it. And at some point, someone is going to have a problem with them. Maybe a parent, maybe a student, maybe a coworker. The problem won't really be about job performance. The problem will be that they're trans. That person, or someone connected to them, will take their grievance to social media. If they're lucky, Libs of TikTok will pick it up. Or Turning Point. Or one of the other accounts that have built massive followings by turning trans people into content. The post will frame the trans person as a predator, or a groomer, or a bully, or a tyrant. It won't matter what actually happened. The framing is the point. Then the calls will start. To the school board, to the administration, to the HR department. Local news will cover the "controversy." A state legislator will demand an investigation. The institution, desperate to make the problem go away, will put the trans person on leave. Maybe they'll be fired outright. Maybe they'll resign because the harassment makes it impossible to do their job. Either way they're gone. And then the person who started it all will go on Fox News. They'll get a GoFundMe. Maybe a speaking gig at a conservative conference. If the story is big enough, if it goes viral enough, they might get something more. A podcast. A book deal. A center with their name on it. This is not a guess. This is a pattern. We've watched it happen over and over again, and we will keep watching it happen until the institutions that capitulate to these campaigns start recognizing them for what they are: coordinated attempts to purge trans people from public life, dressed up as individual controversies.
