as someone who worked at the CDC, the way they’ve targeted these illegal firings are pretty much what i would do to inflict maximum damage to what remains of our nation’s federal public health infrastructure. a hostile takeover of the agency
adamkeiper.com
You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

The specifics of the RIFs I’ve seen in group chats have been staggering. Bracing & reminding myself these are specifically intended to cause fear & distress.

Please share URLs for any good trackers you seen as they emerge. (I want more than OMB’s version) fedscoop.com/trump-federa...
Table of how many federal employees have been laid off in the latest RIF (Reduction in Force). This is from an OMB legal filing from Oct 10. For each agency, it lists number of fired employees, RIF notice date, and whether the administrations has recalled any of those employees to do work. Total headcount is 4,100 across 8 agencies. Treasury (1446) and HHS (1200) are the most affected. EPA (30) had the fewest layoffs this time.

Decades later, Tumblr fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are giving me fresh entertainment
Screenshot from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy standing morose Lee in a graveyard there is statue behind her of an Angel or the wings look like they're coming from her back this is paired with the screenshot of a post saying " I'm like a religious heart piece:grotesque, Haunting, full of melodrama and guilt, and unsettlingly horny " Harmony Kendall looking very cute and blonde against the black background paired with "I love being evil and stupid. this is representation. this is diversity. not all of us are Evil Geniuses. some of us put our intimidating throne on spinny Wheels. " Amber Benson as Tara Maclay looking weary saying
"' aren't you tired of being nice' no!!! I'm tired of everyone else being mean!!!!!!!" Spike and Drusilla leaning in close together and both staring out at us . With the post
" hey my girlfriend and I saw you from across the bar and we really like your Vibe so we were wondering if you could maybe kill and eat you"

These people are truly operating on a "How many lights do you see there? (four lights) No, there are five. Are you quite sure?" 'Chain of Command' level of "Just do what I say."

Along with a heaping helping of, "I think it should be illegal not to like or agree with us." when they've already won.

This will be increasingly clear for US science too. The decades-long apolitical science enterprise, built on NIH and NSF, is gone.

We will have to think about how to rebuild.
aselrod.bsky.social
The America we used to live in—the America we want to think we live in—is gone.

We’ll have to build again.
We want to think that the repeated, widespread abuse of basic rights by DHS; the DOJ actions against former officials like James Comey and John Bolton; the presence of 2020 election deniers across congressional and executive branch leaders; the unconstitutional dismantling of federal agencies; the consolidation of old and new media under leadership favorable to Trump; the use of lawsuits and executive branch power to intimidate and silence critics; and the clear attempts to subvert the 2026 and 2028 elections; and Trump's constant insinuation that he might seek a third term do not all in fact mean
that we have crossed the threshold into a competitive authoritarian environment.
But we have. We have passed through the veil. Whatever becomes of American liberal democracy in the near or distant future, it will be a resurrection and not a continuation.

Minor in the scheme of things, but I would have thought that a problem like "because it works on cached data, whenever you search for the tide times Google gives you an AI summary which is wrong" would have been easier to clear up. Not like knowing when the tides are is ever safety critical I guess.

rereading a novel from the 50s set in the 30s and i know this passage did not hit as hard when i first read it in the 90s as it does now
Photo of a passage from "The Watch That Ends the Night"

Jerome stopped and stared at me with incandescent eyes.

"Try and understand this-the fascists have brought back tor-ture, and torture calls for martyrs. And what else is fascism but the logical product of the capitalist system?"

"What do you mean—torture calls for martyrs?"

"Simply this. Unless a man is able to stand up and look the torturer in the eye and say, 'I'm not afraid,' torture becomes the way of the world. It's as simple as that."

"Is it really as simple as that?"

"No." He shook his head impatiently. "No, because underneath it all is the plain economic exploitation of a rotten world.
The communists are the only people who understand that. How can you pretend they're not one hundred percent right when they say that at a time like this the life of a single individual isn't worth a snap of the fingers? Wasn't Debs right when he said that so long as there was a soul in prison he wasn't free?

What does a single marriage count in a balance like that? It isn't easy being me. I know what all this means. [Highlighted sentence:] This evil inside the human animal-the fascists are charming it out like a cobra out of its hole and the capitalists let them do it because they think it's good for business. You think I'm abandoning Sally by leaving for Spain. I tell you, if I don't leave for Spain then I really do abandon her to a future of fascism and concentration camps."

Trump has been illegally bombing boats off the coast of Venezuela.

Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff forced a vote on reasserting Congress's role over war powers and ending this reckless
warmongering.

It failed 48-51.

Murkowski and Paul voted yes.

Fetterman voted no.
