I guess we’ll find out what new horrors this will unleash by teaching everyone in civil society, once again, that there is no reason to ever fear Democrats or take them seriously. Meanwhile, Trump just pardoned dozens of people who helped him try to steal the 2020 election.

This was the first time in years it felt like we were actually making progress stopping the fascists from consolidating their power. All of it, gone, because they wanted to go home.

Last time this happened was early 2021 when they gave them a do-over from the Jan 6 coup, which is how we got here.
the thing that upsets me about this the most is that Dems had all the momentum, republicans were reeling, and we were getting intra-GOP fighting over the filibuster, all while voters were blaming republicans for their incompetence

this destroys all of this. just a total gut punch

Napoleon said “never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake,” but they don’t even think Trump is their enemy.
Trump just had one of the lowest, worst weeks in the history of the American presidency. Yet, he emerged as the winner at the end. And it is not because he is "good" at politics. It's because Democrats are so very bad at it.

A more optimistic take then I've seen lately in the sense that the shutdown fight shows that most Dems are starting to become the fighters we want... but we're not quite there yet.

I believe this has merit while at the same time, every Democrat should be primaried.
i think that there are reasons which would take a very long time to explain why forcing a very short CR and banning RIFs on a rolling basis would be a good move for non-5D reasons but i do not think that that argument would be ripe until it had happened three or so times
every single time the senate does something disgraceful, including things they know are disgraceful and try to hide that they are doing, people come up with some ridiculous story about why it's a 5d chess move and we should trust the plan

If it's going to end up with either caving or the nuclear option anyway, what was the advantage to picking only one line of attack to hit? Take the top three or four most insane things that are the most unpopular, ACA among them but not just that, and make that your package of "demands" to hammer.

They were never going to get ACA subsidies, which is part of why it was a mistake to insist this was only about ACA subsidies and nothing else.
Sincere question: does anybody have any evidence that the GOP/WH would have eventually folded and extended the ACA subsidies if the shutdown continued?

I haven’t seen any. The President didn’t seem to feeling any pressure. No GOP Senator AFAIK expressed any concern. (Some Reps did)

i dont think there’s ever been a point where corporate america has had a sincere sense of morality but it is probably a sign of the times that the culture at most major firms does not even pretend to encourage ethical behavior anymore. the transformation is really stark in tech.
i honestly do not know what major company in america isnt involved in some ghastly shit at this point? i just would not *do* the ghastly shit yourself.

It is hard to comprehend just how feckless and pathetic the democratic leadership is. It is impossible to express just how impotent and self defeating they are. It is a self censoring fact. It is almost unspeakable.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Great news, everybody! The ACA is materially undermined, no concessions were secured on any other front, and Donald Trump will be able to declare this a personal win. But poor people did starve for about a week there, so there's that.
The Senate has decided the HSA idea from Trump is a win and they're going to do it.

Man, this timeline SUCKS.

This is not what they actually say. This is what they used to say, in the long ago before times when Shaheen learned to do politics. There is no kumbaya median voter anymore. The question you get knocking doors is not "why can't you all just work together?" it's "why didn't / will you fight harder?
Shaheen: "When I talk to my constituents in New Hampshire, you know what they say to me? They say, 'Why can't you all just work together to address the problems that are facing this country?'"

The original Dem demands were:
1) Permanent ACA subsidies
2) Medicaid funding restored
3) No more blank checks for the regime (rescission)

They dropped Medicaid immediately. Went silent on rescission. Cut back to 1 year of subsidies on Friday. And surrendered today.
