Classicist, writer, that sort of stuff. Currently teaching Latin to the youth. Yes, my dog's name is Adverb.
Updated my parsing menus for all my Latin sections, so I'm once again spending quality time with the single sheet laminator. I love it so much.

I stare nostalgically into the distance, remembering hours spent after school at the house of two friends, swapping off who was at the keyboard based on who was best at a given minigame. (In ship to ship combat it was definitely not me.)
Sid Meier's Pirates game was different, because you had a dance off. But it was delightful.

Some random dude once responded to a fun archaeology discovery tweet of mine with "Did you know that archaeologists now use satellite images and LIDAR to find ruins?" I replied "Yes I know I wrote the textbook". Truly GOATed days, they will never return.

I miss when Twitter was truly great like the time a guy got upset at someone calling out a cricket team and started explaining how bowling worked and at the end OP was like "thanks for explaining btw I hold the world record for most career outs in cricket history"

This feels profession-skewed? Like I can see law firm clients being the group least cool with discussing stuff over a Zoom or other tech product vs in person
Law firms now make up more than a tenth of all leasing activity for U.S. office space, doubling their share since the pandemic as other sectors have pulled back, according to newly released data from brokerage Savills reut.rs/3KaTfeS

Har a lovely little conversation with a woman at the bus stop this morning, and then passed her walker ("I call it my headache") up to her over the three bus steps. (The smaller buses have wheelchair lifts on the side, but not simple ramps.) She's ringing a bell to earn money for a bill.

PILGRIM: This is good. What is it?

INDIAN: That is corn. It is also called maize.

I went as a grad student, and not only did I leave with a vastly new appreciation for Etruscan water management systems (and hate for Mussolini), it was a great way to interact with other classicists at all levels and directions in their careers. Highly recommended if you can swing it.
A reminder: we are very interested in having *school teachers* apply for the Classical Summer School, in addition to graduate students. Please pass this along to any teachers you may know!
Please spread the word: the 2026 application cycle for the Classical Summer School of the American Academy in Rome is now live! (Yours truly as Director for my final year). www.aarome.org/apply/2026-c...

My I Am Not Enron T shirt is raising a lot of questions about whether I am Enron
Nvidia refuted accounting questions in a memo to analysts, saying "Unlike Enron, NVIDIA does not use Special Purpose Entities to hide debt and inflate revenue" (Tae Kim/Barron's Online)

In an ideal world i would absolutely support AD, but our world is not there yet.

Nothing has radicalised me more on this issue than listening to Disabled Canadians recounting their experiences
I will be the first to admit I couldn’t understand why anyone would oppose Assisted Dying… and then I became disabled and had it “offered” to me.

It’s not compassionate when there’s coercion.

It’s not dignified when it’s offered in lieu of care.

Listen to disabled people.

Cool Penguin Facts

1. There's a version of them that's little. And blue. 💙. Shockingly, they are called Little Blue Penguins. Also sometimes, fairy penguins.

2. The oldest one is 25 years. Old. This is her.

3. Her name is Lazzie and it's her birthday.

So, so, SO many of these "think of the children" laws specify a long list of terrible content no kid should ever be exposed to! And then write the laws such that providing help for that content qualifies.

I spent three hours in a presentation/discussion on contemporary neuroscience about executive function plus its relevance to our pedagogy, and now I am (ironically?) all out of executive function myself.

Some fun examples from LotR movies. "Here, Gandalf uses metacognition and impulse control."
