Crazy discussion on The Last Word just now with Ian Guider telling @thinkorswim.bsky.social he is completely wrong to say that reduced speed limits are proven to save lives & injuries (Wales) & that protection of the most vulnerable road users should take priority over drivers.

It's definitely dangerous but lack of helmets is absolutely not why.
It's a really clear illustration of why focus on helmets is a massive distraction. Either deliberately (by people who want to push responsibility away from driving), or because many people in good faith perceive utility cycling as inherently much more dangerous than it is.

Our lot pretending there are no algorithms at play framing and guiding user actions and that this is all down to personal responsability is definitely a choice.
This is what every government should be doing. These platforms should be regulated and forced to behave according to the law, otherwise democracy is over. You can't have a few unimaginably wealthy men have complete control over algorithms that are shaping public discourse on dominant platforms!

In short: the #AMOC is weakening, may collapse this century, &even small shifts could trigger abrupt change

These tipping points are a major national security blind spot, threatening food, energy &global stability, they must be addressed urgently

Or in the country side, where it's very arguably worse.

"Ah shur I know this road like the back of me hand"
And honestly, no offence, but if you don't cycle in a city regularly, I don't care what you have to say about it because you don't have enough knowledge or experience to comment

You wouldn't care what I have to say about rugby and you'd be right

John O'Brennan sitting in his ivory tower can't see why the government shouldn't be trusted because they work for his class.

Still pretending the Secirity Council can override the General Assembly tells you all about the lack of good faith here.

This shows how seriously government takes the carnage on our roads.

Floating this populist, victim blaming nonsense while they shelve evidenced measures is an insult to those who have lost their lives on our roads, their families and friends and to everyone who gets around using active transport.

The RSA did an advertising campaign whose basis was that if you are a young man and not driving, you are a big loser.
On RTE 1 there, Today with David McCullagh, @mcculld.bsky.social asks: "what advice would you give to road users?"

RSA spokesperson: "Very dangerous conditions for drivers." Continues to talk about drivers. Drivers only.

DMC: "any advice for any other road users such as cyclists?"

RSA: "Eh...."

Would love to see figures on how many of the cyclists killed and injured are wearing hi-viz and helmets.

If government felt they had a compelling case here, we would have. Instead they thought they could rush this through to the cheers from the worst drivers.

I was wearing hi vis when a motorist drove into me. Passengers in the car got out to tell me the driver was really upset because she didn't see me. I didn't have much sympathy as I was picking gravel out of my hands.

I was visible. She didn't look.

I was wearing helmet and hiviz when another parent at son's school slammed open his van door while I passed and knocked me into traffic. Said that the van had been made with a "blind spot".

So vision zero is all about blaming people on bicycles for drivers hitting them. bsky.app/profile/citi...
Yet again we have more BS calls for people on bikes to have manditory HiViz & plastic hats.

Meanwhile in the real world the actual threat comes from drivers. This guy was looking at his phone as he blindly followed the car in front of him across a segregated cycle-lane.

If this comes before the Dáil in its current form, someone has to introduce an amendment to make helmet wearing mandatory in cars, and restrict car colours to bright, neon paint.

knocked off my bike on my way to work, full high‑vis gear. As I lay on the road waiting for the ambulance, the driver admitted she hadn’t seen me. The Gardaí never arrived. I spent 12 weeks on crutches with soft‑tissue injuries. I could have died.

This is cycling in Copenhagen.

No hi-vis. No helmet mandates.
People cycle because it’s safe — by design.

This is what cycling should look like.

FFG don't believe in magic wands, but do in magic vests.
These high-vis vests should say:

"Government Mandated Driver Hurty Feelings Protection Vest"

or

"I have to wear this because the government won't build protected cycle lanes"

or some other snarky statement.

Any other suggestions?

The problem that many adults do not seem to realize about "age verification" is that everyone who is not a teen will have to provide ID (and personal data) to prove it. It's not about protecting kids, it's to control everyone.
Don’t believe the claims about ‘kids safety’ behind the push for Online ID checks. They are and always have been about surveillance and censorship.
