I cannot stress enough how under international law these were not combatants and this was not an acceptable use of force whatsoever, it is not even close, but sure let's have the second strike discussion
Because I can already tell this is going to end up being a discourse (since this is the lie that Congress originally got told too), worth reminding folks that even if these were combatants and the cargo was a lawful target, you're only allowed to target it in compliance with proportionality
The NYT giving people involved in all of this anonymity to protect themselves from accountability and so they can try to get others out of war crimes, murder charges, or both is a choice.

Yeah, the abusive drunk who ordered the entire military high command to hear a lecture on grooming wouldn’t do something foolish.
GOP Rep. Don Bacon: "I don't think Secretary Hegseth would be foolish enough to make this decision to say, 'Kill everybody. Kill the survivors,' because that's a clear violation of the law of war."

once again expressing my strong support for Kash Patel being allowed to fly private planes to his girlfriend's concerts and go to sporting events and generally do anything other than his actual job, really the best case scenario for a Trump Guy running the FBI
This has been shared via a bunch of sites. It is worth noting that the report, relying on anonymous internal sources, seems to be coming from the right (complaints about ongoing Trump Derangement Syndrome, lack of Fox News, welcoming end of DEI).

Damning report labels FBI ‘rudderless ship’ under Kash Patel — with him and Dan Bongino more concerned with building ‘personal résumés’
FBI Director Kash Patel is facing withering criticism days after the White House denied media reports that the president is about to fire him.

I wrote much of this several months ago, about Ezra Klein's response to the Kirk assassination, and then never ended up publishing it, but I think this UO "controversy" is a such a perfect example of how TPUSA et al actually advance conservative power that I decided to revive and rewrite it.
What Liberals Can Learn from Charlie Kirk
Over the last few days, if you’re active on political media, you have probably seen references to the “controversy” over a student’s failing grade on an essay at Oklahoma Un…

i’m genuinely so convinced all of this has been a planned operation by the student and her mother (who is commenting on this publicly, and associated closely with the republican party), and big far right propaganda account going all in on it. this is designed to oust trans people from public life

1. Over Thanksgiving, texts from Dem. Sen Ruben Gallego leaked where he repeats far-right talking points on masculinity, lamenting that Democratic women "look like men."

Using far-right gender-panic rhetoric will not ingratiate the Democratic Party towards men.

it simply isn't true that "integrity" requires you to loudly proclaim that the kernel of truth in a bad faith attack has to be given it's due. i feel dirty even conceding it here because it feels necessary to the larger point that you DO NOT need to be That Person.

But weird how the First Amendment doesn't protect the TA from being right
Always liked Parker, so this nastiness is rather disappointing.

I’ll always defend trans rights as I have all my career. But I also believe in the First Amendment’s protecting people being wrong.

And that’s where my engagement will respectfully end for the day.

btw, every "reasonable" person who's own posting stuff like "well, the prompt was unclear," or "she actually kind of did the assignment OK so maybe the TA overreacted"--you are also part of the problem! You're laundering the deliberate targeting of a TA and a blatant abrogation of academic freedom!
This thread is 💯. Labor precarity in academia means the evisceration of faculty governance and academic freedom, opening the door to administrative purges of the most vulnerable. And faculty-esp tenured faculty and academic leaders-who aren't defending their trans colleagues are enabling it.
So yeah, this is fundamentally about trans people and that cannot be elided, but the ways in which junior faculty are targeted and disposed of, while academic jobs are increasingly precarized, and political grandstanders seek to influence academic governance are fucking terrifying for everyone.

TPUSA is an organized faculty harassment network and every university administrator who is good at their job should be trying to remove the organization from their campus. If I was a professor I would be terrified of any student who is a member because they are trying to get me fired for wrongthink.
the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

the problem is that the TA appears to have been the target of a deliberate campaign to silence trans people and force them out of public life. so, it seems like that should be a factor when discussing the first amendment? 1
