please to discover all my young people are readers - I've never pushed them but I read ALL the time, the house is full of books & I read to them as children (nice as well - talking to one of my sons, asking what he remembers: way more than I expected (but my childhood memories are sadly lacking)
In this Year of Reading, a gentle reminder:
The best way to get your kids reading is to let them see *you* reading. The way to *stop* your kids reading is to criticize their choices, or to make reading a competition, or a punishment, or a race, or a learning tool. Let it be fun. Let them read.

It amazes me that so many Brits, a country where copious country house museums, trooping the colours & the Edinburgh tattoo all represent Imperial history, thinks that those they oppressed should shut up & move on.

It’s the same mindset that says ‘no one can do pomp & ceremony like Britain’

Folks, this year will see from me:

-1 new novel.
-1 new edition of an old novel in a shiny new format + new art
-1 novella
-1 short story in an anthology

There's another new novel that's finished, but we haven't reached an agreement on the contract yet.

Plus the usual kids and karate posts.

First book finished in 2026.

Very enjoyable.

Unclear where things are landing until - possibly - the last page (or a sequel). In a very @hutchinsondave.bsky.social Europe, just not fractured in the usual way.

Part espionage story, part shaggy-dog story.

people who say "echo chamber" REALLY mean "why won't you listen while I abuse you" (while regurgitating the same ignorant rubbish that we've all heard a million times)

People who think and question have something to offer. I've learned so much interacting with queer & trans people.
I've seen people say Blusky is an echo chamber.

An "Echo chamber" is when you put yourself in circumstances where you aren't presented with new or divergent ideas.

Avoiding spaces where such ideas are presented exclusively in toxic ways isn't an echo chamber-

It's self care.

I live in a majority non-white working class area and I have never felt safer. What is really damaging London is money: high rents, chainification and blandification, the forces of gentrification pushing long standing working class and/or ethnic minority communities and local businesses out.

Labours MO when it becomes apparent they've made a mistake is doubling down but hey everyone loves them and they are riding high in the polls.......

oh.
Begum may be 'distasteful', but it is pretty clear she was a victim of grooming and trafficking. The decision to make her defacto stateless is also clearly incompatibile with the principles of international law. Labour doubling down doesn't change that it is bad. 1/2

I'm asking John - and indeed all journalists - as a new year resolution to stop comparisons with a national economy and a household budget.

How many years have to go by until we can have coherent conversations in the media about the economy?

This stuff is infuriating cos these women were as famous as male authors that everyone remembers, it's just we don't memorialise women. And that is WRONG. We need these female role models to understand that we all come from amazing - men & women. That's our real history. x /ends

I love media exposing that they really only ever think of white people as people

To the point they try and dog whistle it because someone Brown wins a thing

The BBC does NOT “tell the story of Britain.”

And nor does The Guardian.

Our mainstream media is overwhelmingly run by posh establishment journalists amplifying lazy & predictable “acceptable” narratives.

Several of the largest protest marches in the UK were trans rights marches in the the past few years. You probably wouldn't know this because the BBC coverage of them has been next to non-existent.
Meanwhile they will gladly headline a single transphobe staging a one-person protest.

We can’t keep doing government this way, guys. Tax the rich and regulate their power to influence government because this isn’t working. And if the rich don’t like that plan, there’s always:

Notable that the hearty folk calling for the restoration of traditional English countryside practices have the support of a massive nine percent of the population. And can’t even muster a quarter of the Tory rump…
Britons support a ban on trail hunting by 50% to 29%

Support by 2024 vote
Green: 64%
Labour: 62%
Lib Dem: 50% (net +22)
Reform UK: 45% (net +5)
Con: 34% (net -13)

Autechre have gotten better and better over the years
Quick PSA, but Bleep's 50% off Warp sale is now on. Just dropped £15 on 19 Autechre live sets, which equates to just over 22 hours of pure ae: bleep.com/warp-boxing-...

A cultural catastrophe for whom?

The entitled White Middle class who the BBC cater for?

Because for everyone else it’s just Establishment propaganda, and the promotion of post-colonial delusions.

You “cultural catastrophe” has already happened. Any version of the BBC worth defending is long dead. What remains is a vehicle for corruption, propaganda and the normalization of prejudice.

It deserves to be destroyed and I will cheer its passing.
