Look, I know that fast fashion is terrible and I try to buy nothing new and repair what I have whenever possible. But my normal resistance to Temu ads is utterly undone by this objectively incredible item

One of Benjamin Franklin's achievements was debunking a fad for "animal magnetism" by having a Mesmerist zap a tree in his garden, then leading a little boy blindfolded around. The boy began to have extreme reactions to one of the trees and began to shudder, foam and faint. But it was the wrong tree
What makes me the most crazy is how gen AI is as DANGEROUS and SEDUCTIVE as hypnosis spirals. It only works if you believe it works. This whole thing is roughly akin to Rod Dreher thinking bimbofication audio files are real and work.

At an event where a speaker said: "The moment you are transparent with your trust and safety rules, you give a guidebook to your enemies on how to game them."

Which feels pretty much where the BBC has ended up! All this focus on being open and transparent just gives levers for opponents to pull.

I do like how, in the bit of Prescott's memo where he criticises the BBC for editing together different parts of Trump's speech, his own quote of "what Trump actually said" is... edited together from different parts of his speech.

I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.

finally found my big tiddy goth housefriend
The absolutely stunning Tiddy House in Exeter, Devon, England, possibly built in the late 16th century.

A 4-storey brick and timber-framed house with slate tile roof, it is wonderfully wonky and was lovingly restored to glory by Bill Lovell, who bought the severely disrepaired building in the 1960s

Another thought on this brilliant story: police orthodoxy in this country is that, best use if straitened resources is to focus on “high impact” crime. Hard to square that with the fact that essentially every serious look into “petty” crime finds it is scarily organised!
The fun thing about having a small team working with you is you can say "hey you're spending this week digging for stolen mobile phones in London flowerbeds, I promise you it's a thing". www.londoncentric.media/p/london-pho...
London's thieves are burying phones in flowerbeds
The police don't take much interest in returning the stolen devices when they're dug up — so London Centric decided to do it.
