"To call it undemocratic is far too tame. This legislation even shields the government from its own laws."

Democracy is dead in Alberta. Thanks Batshit Smith supporters who voted for her.
" In 1998, Lougheed advocated for a constitutional amendment to prohibit the pre-emptive use of the notwithstanding clause, prohibiting the legislature’s use of Section 33 until “all rights of appeal are exhausted and a final judicial determination is rendered.”"

Absolutely not what Smith said.
“Smith claimed on Monday that Bill 2 “is exactly the kind of circumstance that I believe Peter Lougheed had in mind when he argued so hard on behalf of provinces to include the notwithstanding clause.”

This is incorrect.”

I am not sending my kids back this week. Instead we are hanging outside the school protesting in support of our teachers, and against the UCP'd draconian actions.

Our kids will get an education on non-violent protest and grass roots democracy.

Stop voting Conservative
Where's the premier while MLAs rush through an all-night debate on stripping Albertans of their Charter rights?

An airport lounge, waiting for a flight to Saudi Arabia. She didn't even bother to show up for the vote.

I remember when conservatives turfed premiers for this level of hubris.

Remember when Danielle Smith condemned the "arrogance" of a government for passing laws in a matter of days?

Now she's rammed through a law stripping teachers' charter rights in a single day.

Seems the "democratic process" no longer matters to her now that she's in power.

Today, I submitted 456,365 Albertans’ signatures to Elections Alberta, petitioning the Premier to do the right thing, avoid a divisive and economically harmful referendum, and allow MLAs to vote and reaffirm that Alberta’s future is in Canada.🇨🇦

Alberta is #ForeverCanadian
That is fantastic! 👏👏👏
Thank you and thank you to all the volunteers. 🙏

NDP leader Naheed Nenshi pulled few punches today…

Not only did he condemn Smith’s claim Peter Lougheed would support her attack on human rights…

He called her and the entire UCP caucus cowards.

Populists like Danielle Smith also skip legislative and judicial scrutiny.

Invoking time allocation. And the notwithstanding clause.

Because they can't hack the hard work of liberal democracy.

It's not conservative at all. It's negligently lazy.
Every day, I become more convinced that populists are more lazy than crazy.

Pluralism requires a lot of work. Building consensus, working with divergent interests, working with checks and balances.

Populists skip all that, ginning up fear, fake majorities, and a shallow sense of the public good.

It is time.

Between the superlab, the covid vax, the tylenol, the corruption, it's time to kick em out.

but sure, BC conservative voters... lets get us some of that, eh?

and AB ...you have to get past the ancient notion that default voting for Cons is some kind of claim to fame. It's killing you, and rendering your prov unlivable, as your Premier takes trips to Dubai and Maga-Lago on your tax $
The UCP government has invoked time allocation and on a bill removing Albertans' Charter rights.

And they're using the notwithstanding clause to do it.

Here's why that is a dangerous precedent. And why real conservatives need to stand up against it.

Alberta Strong and Free, Notwithstanding
The UCP's Bill 2 skirts the legislature and the courts, leaving it up to the public to push back swiftly

If I was a teacher I'd quit the profession in Alberta and look for work in other provinces.

Everybody in AB needs to take a stand. Workers, parents, kids, grandparents!

This is their test case. If there is no push back from other labour unions and organizations, it opens the door to use "notwithstanding clause" again and again.

Alberta workers MUST stand against this bill. General strike must move from a threat to an imminent reality.
Will the same convoy people be out now to protect everyone from this stripping of rights, like they did in Ottawa during covid? Will we see Tamara and Chris speak out about this?
