I'm Marin M. Miller, a voice actor, writer, and vocal technique specialist that been working in anime and games since my first booking in 2006! Here are a few of my most well-known titles--do you know them all?

That scream at the end, though....
It may come as a surprise for some to know that a full-time career in acting was not something I've ever been interested in. My goal has always been to work on special projects that excite me.

As a 19 year old, I recognized that I was a niche sell, and that I would never be guaranteed stability.

I’ve seen a lot of exceptionally smart peers buy this idea without interrogating it. If these models could be trained solely on even medium sized data sets, the consumption race between the big players wouldn’t be happening.

There are 2-3 companies that own an amount of assets that even gets close
I cannot stress this enough: this is not possible

in a literal technological sense: you cannot train an AI and expect even comprehensible results with under ~1 million pieces of data, nobody can supply all that with the variance needed. You can only achieve it through wanton scraping
Larian CEO says Divinity could have gen AI assets in it but only if the tools are trained on the studio's own data.

"If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it'll be trained on data we own."

This is simply not technically possible. You cannot generate enough writing in-house to train an LLM. You cannot generate enough art in-house to train a GAN. People who think they have a model "trained on our own material" are using a base model of mass-scraped data, unknowingly or disingenuously.

infuriated on behalf of my union siblings in Halifax over this, even moreso after the absurdly long history of struggle in Canada trying to get a union going within Ubisoft.

Do your best work offline and do not expect to be thanked. Do it because it's the right thing to do, not because you want people to like you. We all go into the dirt alone. No one else will be there when your guardian angel starts listing off your good deeds. Learn to be emotionally self-sufficient.

When things slow down as an actor and you panic with finding meaning and joy in the process without the external validation of booking: return to the "why."

Why are you doing this? I didn't do this for money. I did it for love. Where is that love coming from?

My reasons have changed over the years

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.

A professor I studied under had said the exact phrase, "Nothing is untranslatable," and I've held onto that notion long before I decided to become a translator.

Like with writing, like with acting, you're trying to convey something through a translation, and the job is to make it work.
