Marty is such a great dude, realizing one day that he knew who I was was one of my random favorite thrills about working there
Marty Weil is a legend. He was the last reporter remaining from the Watergate era at the Post. Just an phenomenal old-school metro reporter. They axed him too.

Please read this story to honor his tenure at the Post. (Gift link)

Take this as an opportunity to request Election Day off & work as a poll watcher, volunteer with ICE watches, or offer rides to the polls to ensure our free elections continue.

Tbh, if we start planing early enough, you could get local businesses to close Election Day.

the $75 million Jeff Bezos set on fire for that Melania propaganda piece could have funded most independent newsrooms for literally decades
always bears repeating that this is NOT a financial decision. jeff bezos is worth over 250 billion dollars. he can afford to lose many millions and never even notice it. this is, at its core, a political and personal decision by bezos to destroy the post
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Post says one-third of its staff across all departments, not just the newsroom, is being laid off.

hoo boy yeah
I 100% agree with this but I will add that the people of BlueSky would be mad as hell at the revealed audience preferences.
Its both true that the media business, which is what the news fundamentally is, is a very difficult business to run and to be successful, but its also an industry where companies executives and managers have been ruined upon entry because they tried to give the public something they didn't want

Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

"under my leadership, our newspaper has lost readers and subscribers at record rates. this shows that I was correct about what was wrong with the newspaper."
Notable bits from this email:
- WaPo search has declined by half in three years
- Daily story output has "substantially fallen" in the last five years
- Murray argues: "we too often write from one perspective, for one slice of the audience."
