About a week ago, we got a Great Blue Heron surprise in our back yard. They normally prefer the large fields on all sides of us - better eats, I suppose. I've seen them from far away, but having one this close was stunning and magical. Not a great photo but still proud of it.

So for every No Kings Protest I’ve been to, so far when I’ve reached out to local friends no one was going but when I got there it was a huge turnout.

Now, today, 2 separate groups of people contacted ME to see if I was going!

and I helped push his boat off the beach so he could sail back into the night, get home and get ready for another day of fishing. I sat up for a while in a slightly drunken haze, treasuring my new hat. Stained with some wear, but that meant way more than a clean, manicured lid to wear on my dome.

He told me it didn't matter since we were connected in looking for a better future for all people putting in the work. Nonetheless I made sure to offer him a hat from my hometown in exchange. He was happy with that and then we finished the rest of our tequila. We then embraced,

His story inspired me to share my own family's history with unions and organized labor. He saw the connection was significant and acted on it. Before I knew it, he had taken off his hat and handed it to me. I didn't want to accept it and leave him without this hat that clearly meant a lot to him.

So, with outside help, the villages formed a collective to negotiate for fair, equal pay for their catches brought to the large city markets. After that, the villages could afford things like electricity and refrigeration. It transformed their lives. I was very touched with this connection to me.

I knew what the words on the hat meant. But I wanted to know why he identified with it. He spoke about years before when the fishermen in the village would take their catch to the nearest city to sell. Yet they were not getting the same prices as other individuals and companies that were bigger.

Since, among our campers, I spoke more Spanish than anyone else, the fisherman got to chatting with me more than the others. Eventually we went down the beach and sat in the sand with some tequila and started to talk more about our respective lives. At one point I asked him about his red hat.

21 years ago I was on a camping trip in Mexico. Staying on an isolated beach up the shore from several small fishing villages. A few of the fishermen would come in the morning to take paying campers out to fish. One of the fishermen accepted our invite to stay for dinner as we grilled the fish.

Idk. Maybe not one account, but the several dot-govs that were established here could be a source for some of it. Could be that the divisive crap follows around the current govt crap like a malodorous cloud - both ahead of and trailing the actual crap storm itself 🤷🏽‍♂️
