Somewhere between Rochester & Syracuse. Sky has cleared and is now wonderfully blue and pink, but as we travel the snow kicked up by the front of the train still lends the view some vague Snowpiercer vibes. My car is now half full but everyone is quiet. We’re all in this together. #KatieTrainDay

During the Great Depression, the WPA hired 274 librarians, mostly local women, to carry books from local libraries to rural Appalachian residents, riding 100-120 miles a week, across rugged terrain.

They also prepared special collection scrapbooks with recipes, canning techniques, how-to guides.
These Women Rode Miles on Horseback Just to Deliver Library Books

In my ongoing attempts to give you a break from *gestures widely* THE HORRORS:

Let's talk about the utterly bizarre science of cats' purring.

Here's a weird starting point:
There are NO cats (Felidae) that can BOTH roar AND purr.

Cats that roar = genus Panthera
Cats that purr = genus Felis

The clergy just keep coming to this anti-ICE protest.

Genuinely unclear where they all will go — it’s packed outside on the sidewalk already.

Same. Learned a lot researching my family tree. Some good; some not so good.
The history of my own whiteness includes ancestors who supported white supremacy and those who fought against it, often in the same family, and also ancestors (the Irish and Italian ones) whose "whiteness" was debatable for decades. It's all there. Also, white supremacy fucking sucks.
Respectfully, I am going to whisper to some of our white comrades a truth that should be more widely known: You definitely have some ancestors to be proud of, ancestors who refused white supremacy, and poured out their lives in many of these struggles over time.

Time to claim your true history.

(If you're not from the Twin Cities, this is like MoMA closing in support of a general strike—a very big deal)

If you're in central Texas & you have room to house a shelter dog in a spare room Friday - Mon/Tues, area shelters would love your help getting dogs out of outdoor kennels and into homes for a brief break. You don't have to do a lot with them, just let them decompress while we wait out the weather.

The birthrate debate is only a "debate" for racists (great replacement theory) and hardcore capitalists (who fear the greatest wealth redistribution since Reagan—only going the opposite direction.) It is not a debate for serious people. 20yrs from now a lower birthrate will be a feature, not a bug.

A neighbor was taken to a care facility, and her little tortoiseshell kitty was left behind. I can't take her in but I've been feeding her and giving her water every day. No one in the neighbor's family can take her in. Is there anyone in the Inland Empire area that could foster or adopt her?
