Real-time experiment: what happens when the world’s leading economy reallocates its law enforcement resources to liquidation of its own labor force?
New numbers show ICE is devouring US law enforcement: 1 in 5 US marshals, 1 in 5 FBI agents, half of all DEA agents, and over two-thirds of all ATF agents are now assigned to ICE enforcement. These are agencies with critical jobs they're now NOT doing.

In retrospect it's clear the USSS was aiming to become the go-to federal agency for computer crime cases (i.e. a turf grab), and this ill-conceived raid was their effort to grasp that big ring. It blew up in their face, and the FBI has handled computer crime cases ever since.

Emissary is one of the best, most cogent writers & thinkers on Palestine on this or any other platform. Please help if you can!
Hello friends, I recently lost my health insurance + benefits & am currently looking at a bill of over $16,000 for which I cannot pay. This would not necessarily be an issue if I were not visually impaired and currently out of full time work, but I am humbly asking for assistance now. Any bit helps.

That the legislature rather than the executive controls when and if the nation goes to war was one of the most specific, deliberate, and extensively explained changes the Constitution made from the British model. "This is a power the crown had but the president won't" was absolutely unambiguous.

The atrophy of congressional war powers to an effective nullity is just as much part of how we got to such an insanely aggrandized imperial presidency as all the other cases of executive power run amok. There would be no question of war with Venezuela right now without it.

See, this is why you turn off most interactions. Because sometimes you put a virtual synth into a post about analogue synths and now I don't have to hear about it. Bliss.

If I had a little more budget I'd love to get back into analogue synthesis. Still one of my favorite hobbies. You get to craft sound, by hand, with electricity, in real time. You make a sound you will never hear again.

I've heard this before. it seems bizarre, but really does seem to be the case.
It's an extremely common misconception that people who have verified identities or are using their "real" names are less abusive online, but it's not true. Pseudonymous and anonymous people behave less abusively than people using their "real" names: journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

I feel like a right-winger frothing at the mouth about the Frankfurt School, but there in fact is a vast international fascist conspiracy that has deeply infiltrated our society and must be extruded root and branch.
And then there’s the story about Alex Karp’s not-at-all-weird interview (for lack of a better word) with Oswald Mosley’s grandson for a senior position at Palantir.

I spend so much time complaining on here I want to note that I had a pretty fantastic day. Went with the wife to the cat show, had this amazing hatch chile skillet at Chilaquiles, came home and had birds at my new bird feeder and merlin bird app showed six new birds, and smoked a solid joint.

Tech fetishizes ideas. Once a senior stakeholder has an idea, it MUST be built before it can be "validated."

The main outcome of this process is ANXIETY, because people know they are making a huge bet, but the risks aren't being acknowledged.

I'll be writing on this in the next Product Picnic.

"RemoveWindowsAI" is a script created by zoicware, available on GitHub, that does exactly what it says: it remove every AI feature in Windows 11. Do what you wish to do with this information. I'm sharing this because some folks are forced to use Win11 at work or other places for any reasons.

The US military has spent billions of dollars worth of munitions and operational costs to participate in the war. Each dollar we spent is a dollar Israel doesn't have to spend. But it goes even deeper than that. Our dollars go much, much further than Israel's would if it had to do this alone.

I'm really curious what non-pseudonymous folks expect to gain from demanding my name and face before they'll listen to me

like, you won't know me

you won't know that's my real name or face

I'm nobody. this is just Lex Luthor Taking Over The Flash's Body And Looking In The Mirror but pettier.
They're like "If only people were more susceptible to stalkers then nothing bad would happen!" because they started off at thinking people shouldn't be anonymous and came up with a reason to believe it.

Yup, it's what it always comes down to at the end of the day - you have a divinely ordained bodily purpose to fulfil, and deviating from that (by choice or not) in any way is deemed wrong and unacceptable.
I think it's worth emphasising that this isn't Musk being thick and not realising women have hysterectomies. It's rooted in his misogynist, nazi politics – they really do think the only real women are those who are capable of giving birth. That's all women are really for.

The New School was founded by Columbia University professors who wanted a university run by the faculty with minimal administration. For over 100 years it has been a unique institution with progressive values and incredible students and faculty from Ai Weiwei to Hannah Arendt. We are devastated.
Last week, the New School issued voluntary separation & early retirement offers to 40% of the full-time faculty & the majority of non-union staff. These cuts to the bone are an ideological attempt to decimate historic spaces of critical inquiry & social justice. Share our statement tr.ee/qQBIDCpIuj

This isn’t unavoidable. It’s a choice. Your choice.

You know this isn’t inevitable. You know other countries don’t live like this. And yet you choose inaction.

found I can help over 100 people who want to be helped in the time and effort it'd take to argue with 1 who is unteachable and doesn't want help
