ME: *watching clip of Trump blather-barking garble-nonsense at cabinet meeting*
THE MISSUS: *walking past* Did he just call those people "son of a bitches"?
ME: He did.

THE MISSUS: Makes sense. That's exactly who would be president in the Samurai Cop universe.

Do you notice how the catch all excuse for an entire generation of awful public figures who have behaved horrendously, whether left or right, is: “the kids have all gone crazy on social media”. Do you see how it is in fact the old farts who have roasted each other’s brains on Twitter and Facebook.

This is absolutely real. The current HBO Max version of this "Mad Men" episode "remastered for 4K" did not include an updated visual effects shot, which originally painted out the crew and equipment. Not just that, the HBO Max episode titles/order is jumbled for s01.
HBOMax has started showing a 'remastered' 4K Mad Men and they’ve messed things up so during Roger’s oyster vomit scene you can now see the crew men with the vomit hose on the right

So I accidentally did a thing that, due to one thing and another, means the Looms from the Doctor Who books are now definitely canonical - plot twist! - but in the Marvel Universe.

it's it's a wonderful life season. i love this movie to shreds. it is one of the great socialist films made by a staunch anti-communist. one of my favorite scripts. and david lynch talking about it is lynch at his most emotional.

A friend of mine who was trained as a data scientist, then worked at Google as a TPM, mentioned a while ago that data science is a lost profession. It's all machine learning and "AI" now, seemingly as you describe: asking the magic computer to tell them things.

It is *lunacy* for the ostensibly liberal opposition party to say we shouldn't limit any individual's wealth and power after watching a cadre of fascist billionaires systematically destroy this country. That's probably the single most important thing we *must* do!

Kinda wild Adams' best take on the future of computers was when he knew nothing about them and was even a little scared of them (in later years he became a mac obsessive and very excited by all the possibilities of things like the internet).
I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.

have written that piece before but there's a whole lot of "oh wow this generation of kids are fucked" and nowhere near enough "huh what exactly have that generation of parents been doing and how can we not do that, going forward"
People are very hard on young people on here, lack of critical thinking, lack of responsibility etc, and then you see something like this and it all makes a different kind of sense.

This is as good as this stuff will ever be, this is the phase where we're all supposed to be getting hooked in to this disruptive new thing. Once the free money dries up and they have to turn a profit, it will inevitably get worse and worse
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?
