"Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario have all lined up at the Supreme Court to say that when a government invokes the Notwithstanding Clause, the courts should stay out and not even look at the case."

The sights in the British bombers (Lancasters anyway) were more or less as good as nordens in practice -- or at least, there is a lot on the internet that says so.

(Also I don't know if it's really true that "they" wanted revenge, rather than one specific guy in charge wanted revenge...)

“U.S. wine exports to Canada dropped 96% in the second quarter—from nearly $111 million last year to under $4 million this year—and the U.S. wine trade surplus with Canada has flipped to a deficit for the first time ever.”
California’s Wine Industry Is in Crisis
Changing drinking habits, falling prices, tariffs and the weather are forcing winemakers to do the unthinkable: rip up the vines.

Night and Fog is definitely not joyful, but it definitely *is* important cinema... etc.

I don't doubt that professional chess/basketball players get something very worthwhile out of playing, but the amount of stress involved makes me suspect "joy" is not the term they'd use to describe it.

Ditto stuff like Getting Over It... entertaining, sure; joyful seems like a stretch.

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

Writing something about ICE and sweet Jesus it is so incredibly dark what they are doing to these cities. We have all seen the videos, but when you wade into the details of their actions, it is extraordinarily bleak.

I had one audition as Krishna Bhanji & they said, 'Beautiful audition but we don't quite know how to place you in our forthcoming season.' I changed my name, crossed the road, and they said when can you start?

They're dismantling the basic infrastructure of disease prevention in order to pay for more masked thugs to break down people's doors and disappear them in the night

FULL STORY HERE: Emails began flooding CDC inboxes late Friday night announcing dozens of layoffs. HR people brought back from furlough to oversee the RIFs. Disease detectives, entire Washington office, global health, injury prevention, MMWR staff among those hit.

At least we no longer have to hear about freedom being in Americans' DNA or whatever. Turns out we love to eat shit and bow to some bloated halfwit like any other people throughout history

This whole series has been great, and genuinely moving, despite (or because of) being polished campaign video.

It is so rare to see those techniques—with that *surety*—used to say things like this, from positions like this, with a platform like this. No hedging, here.

Makes me want to do the work

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Is it just me, or does it seem the press is actually and completely terrified to report about Donald Trump's physical and mental health the way it would have if anyone else were president?

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

Of all the news in this NYT survey of sitting federal judges - incl 47 of them think the SCt is mishandling its emergency docket - maybe the biggest is that 65 sitting fed judges (37D, 28R), folks circumspect for a living, responded to a NYT survey. Stunning. And a sign that something is very wrong.

It depends on how big a problem "get endlessly lost in a giant world that looks more or less exactly the same (black boxy environments, with different hues in the background), because useful map features (pins/memos, marking your location on the map) are missing or limited" is for you. ;-;

I guess this is meant pretty tongue-in-cheek, but in case it's not: this is a horribly narrow definition which reduces games to more or less vapid escapism.

Imagine this same attitude applied to music, film, novels, etc.: only "happy" music and "fun" films are allowed?? :/

This is basically how AI took over the workplace.

Sure, there was some push (Microsoft baking it into Office) but the "use AI for everything or be fired" dorks are do-nothing managers, using their free time to become TESCREAL-pilled, and posturing in front of each other about how agentic they are.

Whenever you hear a tech CEO spinning out *absolute fucking nonsense* using star trek language, some of what you're hearing is a screeching positive feedback loop between him and the crackpots he's spending all of his time listening to.

Some of whom he literally created.

This thread will explain my decision and why I believe this is a true crisis. I hope ya see this and if you want to chat, + or -, lets do it 1/
