👏 WHICH 👏 PARENTS 👏 RIGHTS?
Parental restrictions on library access continues to remain incredibly unpopular for a fourth year in a row.

The vast majority of public school parents are not looking to limit their children’s access in the library.

It makes me really uncomfortable seeing visible-sternum thinness coming back into vogue, because I WAS that thin and I viscerally remember how it physically sucked. I was so exhausted, moody, my blood sugar would crash randomly, and my teeth would literally chatter at 50 degrees.

If the Dems had any fuckin’ brains, saying “the part of Epstein is trying to make laws that let them look in your kid’s pants” would be a pretty easy way to crush the Republicans
it’s also a thing where people can be convinced. the right got some people worked up about trans women in sports but possible to get people a lot more worked up about individual/parental rights, genital inspectors, etc
I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.

Interesting thread
A theory about vibes:

Human beings are deeply social creatures. Our need for a legible social order is rooted almost as deeply in our brainstem as our need for basic physical security. We need -- not want, need -- to understand who's in charge, who are allies, who are enemies, *how things work*.

I'm so good at being like "why am I having a nervous breakdown? my life is great, I have nothing to worry about" meanwhile I didn't get the loan repayment grant I applied for, my husband is partially furloughed, our hot water was out for most of the week, and my debit card information was stolen.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

well, I read it, and the salient, non-gross part is Lizza alleging, midsentence and without elaboration, that Nuzzi ran numerous “catch-and-kill operations” on RFK’s behalf, which would give her a role in both his appointment and the untold preventable deaths he has abetted in office. Cool.

the implicit standard of "criminality" is doing a lot of work here, mostly as a desperate appeal to avoid thinking (not grading any of your students' exams is not criminal behavior either but you can very quickly see how that might nevertheless put a professor's employment in jeopardy)

Important 🧵!

There's tons of research on this in school contexts (plus DV & cults as Sandy notes). The only programs that effectively address bullying 1) bolster community relationships & 2) provide explicit bystander training. Standing up to a bully/abuser runs counter to human survival instincts.
Just wanted to say: Have been reading versions of this a lot.

If you've survived an abuse situation, you understand the *point* is that he insults her AND that nobody speaks up. Of course nobody does. The entire presentation is the propaganda. It's about the witnesses' compliance and complicity.
I’ve been thinking and it’s kind of exceptional that not a single person said “Hey now” after the piggy comment.

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

It's sort of a bummer to me that the reaction to the Epstein emails has basically been "kids are actually fair game to traffic after puberty" on the right and "LMFAO TRUMP MIGHT HAVE DONE GAY SHIT" on the left.

Part of the reason I think there isn’t as much pressure around stopping ChatGPT re: suicide/psychosis as compared to stuff like Panera Lemonade is because people are inclined to blame it on mental illness versus the tech, a kind of victim-blaming mentality that fits neatly into just world fallacy

genuinely crazy-making how much the national press is indifferent to the verifiable fact that jd vance is buddy buddy with internet nazis, and the degree to which this is almost certainly a form of solidarity among people with a similar institution pedigree

Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed by my present political and historical moment, I close my eyes and say to myself, "All throughout written history there has been enormous wealth and power concentrated in the hands of a few assholes and very little the average person could do about it."

this feels completely banal? yes, a big tent political party is going to include voters who have bigoted views. i don’t think anyone has argued otherwise? the actual question at hand is “to what extent should a political party ostensibly committed to equality appeal to popular prejudices?”

Maybe my first Story Time thread on Bluesky.

A little over an hour ago our building caught on fire. It was successfully confined to two apartments, about two floors above us, but we had to throw our cats in their carriers and decamp to the other building's courtyard for a little while.

This entire article uses the phrase "higher education" when what it actually means, contextually, is "business school."
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."
