I think it's very notable that the current sitting president repeatedly says in public that he doesn't think he's going to heaven and the press never ask him the easy follow-up of what it was he thinks is going to send him to hell.

To be fair: that is in of itself a good reason to use Russia when referring to the Soviet Union. Because the Soviet project was merely a veneer to hide Russian colonialism, and using the terminology that they did only allows them to further obscure that fact.
