Wales could give local authorities the power to install side road zebra crossings at junctions. This would be a first for the UK – giving pedestrians more priority at side streets.

But what is a side road zebra? And how would it work? 🦓

The NHS itself is responsible for 4% of the traffic on UK roads. As an anchor institution, it should be leading the change. Yet all anyone’s trying to do there “is convert the fleets to electric when in fact what we should be doing is supporting the staff to commute by active travel or by bus.”
We must get fitter if we’re to afford the future, says McNally

I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

If you want your city to be a great place for everyone, especially children, older and disabled people, to get around safely and conveniently, then don’t invite in a load of driverless cars.

You’ll just be landed with a new source of congestion and serious extra chaos if there’s a power cut.
“Traffic lights across the city were down, seemingly confusing the driverless cars —& halting them in their tracks. Riders and pedestrians posted videos of Waymos stuck at intersections, long lines of drivers behind them.”

Less well known— driverless cars contribute to traffic congestion EVERY day.

What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).

Mobility in cities is about space.

Outsource it to the public. It works.

Cars are not freedom.

If the only choice you have to get to work or the shops is the make, model & colour of the car you drive, that’s not freedom. Choice within constraints is not freedom.

Freedom is the ability to be able to opt out of the constraint.

Cars intentionally enforce that constraint.

Imagine a 100m race where we’ve given cars an 80m head start after many decades of building almost ONLY for them. If we then set a transportation goal of “balance” between many more choices in getting around, by definition we have to prioritize the new choices for a while, or they’ll never catch up.
