I don’t do the disability advocacy thing out loud as much anymore, but being at school this week had me thinking about the way well-meaning abled people move to help and what actually helps.

This is not shaming anyone. But I appreciate when folks who do instinctually help move intentionally. 🧵

There is a kind of mouse that has been bred over decades to be suitable for skin cancer research. They are *ridiculously* expensive. They're also living animals. You have to feed them and clean their enclosures and take care of them, or they die.

Biomedical research isn't a YouTube video, you cannot hit pause for an indefinite period of time and then hit play whenever the regime wants.

Samples are destroyed, labs dismantled, scientists leave...

Here's what this means: it's probably unlawful forPOTUS to stop NIH funds from going to medical research, but POTUS can stop that medical research for a lengthy period of time while the Court of Federal Claims hears lawsuits

This, essentially, destroys the capacity for medical research in the US

If we’re going to make any progress, we’ve got to quit engaging with the pretext. The DC invasion isn’t about crime, is about authoritarianism. Occupying LA isn’t about immigration, it’s about the racial hierarchy. Stop engaging with the phony pretext.
zingherpolisci.bsky.social
Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

The extensive romance section at East City Bookshop! The view from my seat, showing Mia Sosa interviewing Olivia Dade in the downstairs area of East City Bookshop, centered between two speakers, in front of many bookshelves Lindsay, a white woman with a glitter cane, a striped shirt and a black facemask, and Olivia on the right, in a white and red flowers dress with a white facemask on.

The illustrated cover of ZOMROMCOM by Olivia Dade, featuring the tagline: Love can make you lose your head. The background is a speckly bright purple, and in the foreground are a man dressed in black and a woman in bright pink overalls and a white tank top standing back to back and holding hands. He has a huge sword at the ready, and she is brandishing a shiny cleaver. All around them, clutching at them from the edges of the image, are bright green zombie hands.

When people talk about how systemic and structural issues don't exist but the data all looks like this.
A tweet saying "every single municipal budget looks like the dril candle budget tweet" with a graph showing Police taking like 90% of a city's budget. Baltimore specifically.

Disability is not a vacation.

It’s not like that time you took a week off sick from work.

It’s a 24/7 job. It’s unrelenting pain, fatigue and suffering.

It’s dealing with a medical system that ignores and gaslights you, a society that views you as expendable & people who resent you for existing

I'm really interested to see studies like this and with bigger sample numbers- how I describe my quick muscle fatigue to my PT is like: that lactic acid buildup feeling that I used to get after a long workout, I now get in my arms when I try to fold laundry for 30 seconds.

1) Spanish researchers exposed muscle cells to serum of ME/CFS and Long Covid patients and found:

- reduction in muscle contraction strength

- upregulation of genes involved in protein translation

- elevated oxygen consumption

“Yet, if we don’t raise our voices immediately, that ability could disappear quickly. The moment to scream “Never Again” is right now, not during your grandchild’s history class.”

when RFK says he wants to “end chronic disease,” what people hear is “he wants to cure us” but what he means is “i want to cull the weak”
brianbeutler.bsky.social
Republicans are waging a generalized war on science, but I think many of them don’t fully grok that RFK isn’t at war with science alone or per se: he’s at war with sick people, and of the view that only the lucky should be allowed to survive into old age. They are know nothings, he is Mengele.

RFK Jr. has now officially stated that he will dismantle the United States Preventive ServicesTask Force (USPSTF).

This is an independent body of expert scientists who volunteer their time to review data and provide guidance to Americans on important things like cancer screenings.

Today a doctor asked the question most disabled patients dread…

“What do you want ME to do about it?”

I wanted to scream:

Your job!
Help me!
Solve the problem!
Provide treatment!

But I didn’t. I remained calm. I avoided being “difficult”

I left with no answers 🧵
