The ADL thought it could fall in line with Musk and it would stop his attacks on them. Instead, it just made them complicit, legitimized Musk, and ultimately didn’t actually change him at all.

This is how fascists work. Greenblatt tried being transactional: for fascists, it only goes one way.

The gap between teacher pay and other college graduates’ pay is the highest it’s been in over four decades.

Is there a “teacher shortage,” or a shortage of jobs that treat educators with the pay, dignity, and support they deserve?

Probably recency bias since I just got through these books, but Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn saga shift from the original trilogy to the sequel series. I was wary of the concept, but it ruled extremely hard.

Obama and Biden both motivated atypical voters to show up. Obama with strong messaging and campaigning, and Biden by just not being Trump while that was fresh in the collective consciousness. Harris campaign tried to get the fictional swing voters, and that’s what doomed them.
trickard23.bsky.social
I cannot wrap my mind around how people haven’t figured this out yet. The real swing voters aren’t people who always vote but have no party loyalty, that person doesn’t exist in meaningful numbers. It’s irregular/new voters you need to go after.

A week after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, President Trump and his allies are attacking critics of the right-wing activist, a campaign detractors described as an alarming attempt to stunt freedom of expression.
Trump, allies seek to punish speech they dislike following Kirk killing
The White House-directed campaign, which is likely to face legal challenges, defies past GOP rhetoric condemning the label “hate speech” as a pretext for political persecution.

Assuming that this is the union that represents Attiah, they may have a specific disciplinary grievance procedure in their collective bargaining agreement. So they have actual, mechanical methods of going to bat for her that aren’t necessarily public facing but are still the most effective.

I just want to clarify that the fact I liked this skeet before the previous was extremely intentional

I keep coming back to the idea that reality has a bias. You don’t need to present arguments from multiple angles unless the arguments are actually credible, and credible doesn’t just mean convenient or supported by a lot of people. Sometimes things just are. To pretend otherwise leads to this.

A Florida Department of Transportation crew early Sunday painted the Pulse crosswalk back to black and white for a second time as supporters continued to try to restore the rainbow-colored crossing. Now, police agencies are monitoring the site.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

The first planned migration of an entire country due to climate change is happening! Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation, is at risk of being submerged under rising sea level, so it has signed an agreement with Australia to allow 280 Tuvaluans to settle in Australia as permanent residents each year.

The way that I was raised, being Jewish meant believing that every human life was sacred; to save a single human life meant saving all of humanity. That no law or ritual was more important than saving a single human life.

It's unfathomable that any Jew can accept what Israel is doing in Gaza.

In the past when I sat down to write about Israel, I’ve had a moment where I take a deep breath and accept that, as a Jewish woman, it’s going to be difficult. This time, there was no such moment.

I wrote about the intentional starvation of Gaza by Israel/US, and the moral imperative to say enough:
Gaza is starving
Palestinians seeking food are being killed by the IDF. It's time for the entire world to say enough.

For sure! I had the same impulse to verify that story because it was so grotesque. Gotta check anything that incites a strong emotional response without proper sourcing.

In relevant part in case there’s a paywall:
A screenshot of a Tampa Bay Times article which describes inhumane treatment of detainees at the Everglades concentration camp. It includes a description of a detainee being punished for attempting a hunger strike by being forced to remain outside, suffering heat and relentless mosquitoes, for nearly three hours.

The fact that some of these nations are saying anything at all is a huge step away from previously held positions. Even though it (reasonably) may not be seen as enough by a lot of people, it’s important to note how big of a move this actually is.

One of my friends who I’ve known since we were three years old came out as trans when we were in our late twenties. There’s a learning curve for adjusting name/pronoun usage there after decades of habit, but like… just try? You don’t even have to get it right every time, the effort is what matters.

This might actually be a killing blow to many people’s ability to be informed. This is a genuine cause for alarm.

Billionaires should not be allowed to hoover up media outlets, it is so blatantly contrary to the idea of a free press and society.
