4 images that perfectly tell a California story:

A 3 bed 1 bath 988 sqft house sold for $2.8M

In a school district that has to do budget cuts

While trying to help its growing number of homeless students

Meanwhile residents are mad that a Chase will be replaced with 6 stories of apartments

A reminder that cars aren’t a technology problem. They’re a geometry problem.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

A difference between robot cars vs. regular cars is that with regular cars, drivers walk to where they park, spreading traffic out.

With robot cars, every event turns city streets into an airport pickup line.

Unless the robot car industry starts self regulating, the ever-increasing number of robo-traffic jams is going to unify both sides of the war on cars in one of the weirdest political coalitions 🙃

One other small moment of irony in today’s #MeasureHLA hearing. The city had the audacity to use a photo I took (published at Streetsblog) *uncredited* - in its slide presentation against my HLA appeals. Left: Streetsblog. Right: LADOT slide today.

Jimmy Cliff has passed. His art shaped my youth. Specifically, the harder they come.

"And I keep on fighting for the things I want
Though I know that when you're dead you can't
But I'd rather be a free man in my grave
Than living as a puppet or a slave"

We also uncovered a striking phenomenon of "corporate enclaves": localities w virtually no residents but millions (even billions) of dollars’ worth of commercial property. Examples include the Disney-owned jurisdictions near Orlando and the industrial city of Vernon in LA (profiled by Mike Davis):

This block on West 41st by the Michael J Quill Bus Depot used to be full of illegal parking (No Standing Anytime)

On October 8th someone in NYPD Traffic woke up and started writing tickets. 40 tickets for "Fraudulent Use Parking Permit" since. Now that block is empty.

The submission for a cargo bike emoji wasn't successful 😭

We'll have to stick with this 🚲📦 for now...

The current range of emojis for cycles/cycling do not represent me and how I get around at all:

In comparison:
🚗🚘🚙🚔🚓🚕🏎️🛣️

#motonormativity anyone? @ianwalker.bsky.social
Arrgghh... Gutted to say the least.

Sorry to announce that submission #2 for #CargoBikeEmoji was unsuccessful 😔

No feedback provided from Unicode.

If current guidelines stand, will be 4 yrs before a 3rd time lucky proposal in 2029. This would be a great way to finish the #DecadeOfTheCargoBike

Penalizing poor families for having a car or having minimal savings is pretty bad policy.
After enacting the deepest #SNAP cuts in history & needlessly disrupting benefits during the shutdown, the Trump Administration is quietly advancing draft regulations to take SNAP away from millions more people – primarily working families with kids, seniors & disabled people.
