This is why Star Trek is still the undefeated nerdiest show of all time. Doesn’t matter how many times your new show references Settlers of Catan or whatever. Look at what Star Trek thinks is *cool*.
The thing that makes Star Trek utopian isn’t the end of scarcity or the harmony between all peoples it’s also that the guy on the ship who gets laid the most plays the trombone at work and periodically does community theater

In 2006, I Photoshopped the bear pride flag into the background of a picture of Grover Norquist, and through the vicissitudes of Google Image Search, the image was routinely used by mainstream media sites for a couple of years, LOL.
Achievement unlocked: watched an inbound N turn into an outbound J.
I'm not a suit guy, I am right at this moment wearing a tank top in public, but honestly that buttonhole *does* look strikingly ugly.
this is what contrast buttonholes look like to me

I dunno, I think it would be helpful if journalists translated what “rural” means in this context. Somehow I don’t think Korean people automatically make something less rural simply by existing somewhere.

Unless rural means something else.

Again this administration is just one giant running counterintelligence and insider threat crisis
i keep thinking about how they're doing a massive, rushed, and shadily funded construction project literally right on top of the PEOC

This is the kind of grace you might extend to a neighbor's friend with a tip that might get them fired and has never talked to a journalist before. This is not something a govt official would expect
Oh nooooo, Lindsey Halligan, this is not how any of this works

Judge Graber went hard and I cannot stress enough that Judge Graber *does not go hard*
Divided Ninth Circuit panel stays injunction against President Trump’s federalization of National Guard troops in Portland:

Judge Graber, who is no firebrand, wrote quite a dissent—encouraging en banc review and some patience on the part of the public:

lmao when tweet 8 in the thread starts dropping "ultra vires"
8/ If Halligan wasn't validly appointed, then everything she's done has been ultra vires and void ab initio. That means the stuff she's done gets unwound.

Halligan was the only lawyer willing to sign the James Comey and Letitia James indictments. As far as we can tell, she & only she secured them.

The public sphere must be a survivability onion
There is no system where keeping bad people out of power is not important. You can create systems with rules against abusing power. But we already have one of those. The problem is that the people in charge selectively enforce them if at all, which is why you don't want bad people in charge.

Trump is tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a $250 million golden ballroom for himself and his donors.

DHS: “make it 1989 again”
Me: “very well” and unplugs the Internet
DHS, calling me: “we want the Internet back”
Me: “you were founded in 2002”
Phone: bad number sound
The people born in 1989 are 36. People with good memories of the 80s are much older.
Of course American fascism is just consumerist slop.

"Given Portland protesters’ well-known penchant for wearing chicken suits, inflatable frog costumes, or nothing at all...observers may be tempted to view the majority’s ruling, which accepts the gov't’s characterization of Portland as a war zone, as merely absurd. But [it] is not merely absurd..."
As expected, 9th Circuit panel rules for Trump, allowing deployment of the Oregon National Guard to Portland.

Graber, in dissent, asks colleagues on 9th to vacate the order.
"I ask those who are watching this case unfold to retain faith in our judicial system for just a little longer," she writes

"as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility of Musselmen [=Muslims]" between this and Washington's letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, the framers really went out of their way to say, "No, really, we mean to protect *all* religions."
Thinking to Founders, Framers, so much against any established religion, representing numerous views & beliefs w/little unity. Thus, examples like Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli (1797): "As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion"🗃️

billionaires should not be allowed to exist because the downside of "one of them loses their mind" is simply too dangerous for a functional society

also, having a billion dollars tends to make you lose your mind
The whole point of democracy is so one person's derangement does not become everybody's problem. It's social hygiene. The fact the richest men in the West are a mix of grotty twelve year olds and deranged apocalypse fanatics is a problem, and we should be honest about it.

Another mystery: By 2013 concerns over Epstein's criminal activity boiled over at JPMC. Top execs finally agreed to ditch him as a client. They then waited SIX YEARS to flag his suspicious transactions to FinCEN, even though federal law requires they be flagged right away.

I want to know: with respect to Epstein’s crimes, what did JPMC execs know and when did they know it? If Dimon really knew nothing about Epstein, then how does he explain reported internal emails from his employees flagging Epstein’s activity for him?

If you're a writer/other creator in the United States, consider creating an LLC for your business and then signing up for a local area Chamber of Commerce. Many of them have health insurance plans that pool their members and members of other CoCs to create insurance efficiencies relative to ACA.
After an entire family of four was killed by a motorist, a proposal to redesign the intersection was watered down to signs and paint that drivers ignore, and someone called in a death threat against a legislative aide for doing even that much.
I was reading an article yesterday about a woman calling for e-bikes to be banned after being hit and seriously injured by a cyclist. And yes, her injuries were awful, but we allow cars to kill and maim regularly and no one ever calls for them to even be *limited* in any way.
Cars remain death machines but people love to talk about that bicycle scofflaw they saw one time
