1. Presumably because mages, and indeed most users of magic, had a rather tenuous relationship with aging. A mage could be a thousand years old and look no different than they did in their spry low-hundreds. Likewise, they could have only recently have passed their apprenticeship and already look as ancient as a corpse that had become personal friends with generations of spiders. Witches could look old and wizened from a young age, sporting the expected warts, hooked noses and passing familiarity with well-cared for teeth, or could look like a siren on the waves, ready to seduce sailors. Warlocks preferred to hide themselves in deep, dark hoods, trying to do their very best to avoid sunlight like the most ardent vampire, giving them waxy, pale complexions. Safe to say, when asked by a mage or a witch how old you think they are, best play it safe and use a margin of error in the hundreds.

“If you are coming in, at least shut the screen after yourself,” Fox sighed.
Ignoring her, Mikiva stormed over to the tub. “I need to know what in the name of the Eleven happened yesterday. Av’ry told me to wait for you, but frankly, I think I have waited long enough. So, we are going to talk right now.”
“I suppose that’s fair.” Fox shrugged. “But at least tell Av’ry to come in from the hall, I don’t think it is wise for me to shout this story to the whole bathhouse.”
Mikiva cast a disapproving glance down at Fox’s nakedness, but she reluctantly waved Av’ry into the room anyway. Av’ry, in a testament to his good sense, entered awkwardly, eyes on the ground, and shielded with one hand.
“Hi Fox.” He waved in her general direction with his free hand. “Don’t mind me, I’ll just be sitting over here, starring at the wall.”
“Smart man.” Fox chuckled. “Was there anyone in any of the other baths?”
“No, it looked clear,” he replied.
“Alright. I guess now is as good a time to talk as any, then.”

When Lock Synclaire first laid eyes upon the city of Seba, he thought it was a storm.
That autumn, he and his companions made their way south and had been blessed with fair, if overcast, weather. He saw the threatening smear of black on the horizon and thought their good fortune came to an end. As they drew closer, he realized no thunder or lightning accompanied the dark clouds and understood what the ugly blotch ahead truly was.
Seba stood atop a great plateau on the eastern coast of the Spade Sea. A massive perimeter wall of dark stone surrounded the city, leaving a few towers and building-tops visible from the outside. Surrounding the plateau was a crowded maze of tenements, most of which seemed to have been burned down. Smoke and pollution wafted over the whole area, creating the threatening haze that hovered over the land like a tangible curse.
Until then, Lock would never have thought to call a place monstrous. But to see it from a distance, sitting atop its plateau and shrouded in smog, the infamous city looked every bit the horror its reputation made it out to be. Troa and Seria appeared ill just staring at it.

From the opening of #Charagma, my SFF dystopia where all people are marked saved or damned from birth.

I struggled with this paragraph a lot & I still don't love several things about it, so it will be revised again many more times I'm sure.

Among the painted clouds the sacred city soared, a formation of interlinked basalt islands which were all together the size of a small country, carried on the air by the power of the heavens. As crowded as it was vast, the city was a patchwork of the old and the new, the natural and the unnatural. Brick multi-storied buildings with heavy arches and grand pillars and intricate iron balconies laden with gardens and laundry. Bridges made of solidified light and signs bright with glowing colors and looping holographic projections. Winding cobbled lanes corralled happy citizens in cloaks and hats as they browsed the stores or drank coffee in outdoor patios. And everywhere there was a blank surface or an empty space, bright telescreens blared advertisements and prayers and news of the sinners outside the city.
This was Arx Lucis. City of Light. City of the Blessed.
As for you, my Elect, whose minds were known to me eons before you were born, to you I give the City of Light. Forever shall it carry you above the poisoned earth, safe from the darkness below. I am EL, God Above All Gods.

"Is the king at Two Cities?"
"Vendear." Salde waved toward the array of
dark walls. The CITY straddled the river, Vendear being the part on the other side. A red glow seemed to pervade it, stretching like a sunrise over the ramparts,
throwing an unsettling, bloody cast upon the drifting plumes of smoke. Burning towers flanked the gatehouse, trailing strings of glowing embers into the river. "If you had not noticed, it's under siege." An
airborne fireball leapt over his finger as he pointed. “We' ve already wounded and dead, plenty, without your little friend. Why, were it not for the Bojmen, the Rhursans might have finished us."

"How is that possible?" Cerel blurted.

"Don't ask questions, elf. The wind has changed. The fire burns toward Tiwern's tents, so to speak, and he will regret his avarice when this storm
ends. We'll enter Topan by the north gate."

They left their domain of moist soil and crystalline structures and walked past the gates of iron and stone that had sealed them off from the rest of Felcrown until about six months ago when they officially joined the unified city.
Azzerrad hurried down the remaining tunnel to Godsfall Chasm. He had heard many stories and read official reports, but it was still amazing to see it for the first time. The sheer physical magnitude of the roughly 300-foot wide, mile-deep pit was astounding. People of all shapes, sizes, and species bustled about the walkways and elevators of the Chasm. A fiendish-looking gargoyle flew by carrying a net full of packages towards a higher level. He gave Azzerrad a polite smile and nod, and the mycelial waved back.
He did not want to ever return home. This was too majestic and full of life.

Grilled’s tongue invaded Aubergine’s mouth, intending to lay claim to his prize. His gift, all wrapped up in twine, ready for the conqueror to plunder.
Grilled pressed his body into Aubergine’s. They were both clothed since Shallot might call them to come inside at any moment. He put his arm—the one with his attached hand—around Aubergine’s neck and pulled him down so Grilled could kiss him without having to stand on his toes.
Usually, Grilled liked when Aubergine was the dominant one. They hadn’t gone too far with their activities yet, but in all of Grilled’s wildest fantasies, Aubergine was the one on top.
This time, though… Grilled enjoyed being in control. A sick, lirist pleasure bloomed in his chest, realizing he could do anything he wanted to Aubergine and there was nothing the other man could do to stop him. Not that Grilled would do anything like that. Aubergine was his treasure, and treasure needed to be protected.

Rushak has just told Drisal that he and Lara have broken up. Drisal’s feelings about it are … complicated.

How difficult it must be, to see her every day,
to work with her so closely. "I'm sorry."
It hit him then upon his own broken whisper, a
sweep of relief, guilty and dizzying. He'd never acknowledged the pain he would feel if Rushak and Lara, tivenelen, went on to be joined. She would have had his brother from him. She would share in things
great and small that had BELONGed only to Drisal all their lives. She would own parts of him Drisal could never share, in heart, in body and soul. Worst of all
for the selfish little core of him was that she'd have his brother's faithname.
She would have taken Drisal's place as his
other half. And as he ached with Rushak's loss, biting his lip to stop it from quivering over his brother's
drawn face, that guilty piece rejoiced he still had him—had Rethen—all to himself.
