On your deathbed, you will probably not be thinking, "at least I totally owned those trolls on social media," and if you are it's unlikely there will be anyone there to hold your hand as you go
The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

There’s a thread going around about the horrors of teaching first-year English right now, and I fully believe that it’s true in many cases… but if you saw that thread and you’re sad, I just want to say… my students have never been smarter, more engaged, more passionate. I’ve never felt more hopeful.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Reminder to treat zionists the same way you would treat a nazi. If you don't think a nazi deserves a 1 million dollar acting career than the same is true for zionists.
There are two outspoken Zionists on Stranger Things who have suffered zero consequences for publicly stating genocidal nonsense during the past 2 years. If you can't manage to boycott, or at least pirate that show, you can go to hell

We have fascism. We have long covid and cognitive damage. And we have also destroyed structural motivation to do anything but deliver product and receive results. It began with standardized testing, and "AI" is just the nail in the coffin.

WE MUST FIGHT THIS.

Study must be meaningful.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

If you rebooted RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK today with the same temporal margins, it’d be set in the 1980s. Neo-Nazi punks would have their faces melted by the opening of a forbidden arcade cabinet at the KB Toys at your local mall. Indiana Jones would wear a Hawaiian shirt and Chuck Taylor sneakers.
We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

All of this. Write. Make. Create. Try. KEEP TRYING. Do new things. BE new things. Reinvent yourself every second Tuesday. Reinvent Tuesdays. Change your *name* to Tuesday. There is no age limit on becoming more than you once were, loving more than you once could, or being happier and more fulfilled!
Fuck that noise, do it even if you're old. I learned tattooing at 43. I learned editing and publishing at 46.

There is always still time to do or learn new stuff.
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

THREAD.

3 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he had been living, in rural Cornwall, and decided he wanted to live with us instead.

We decided to call him Jim.

This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st, 2022.

A book is not a luxury item.

(It can be, but so can food.)

Books are both amazing and cheap.

After all my years, I'm still thrilled by a new book.

Even a bad book is full of potential before you read it.

Read* more books. You'll see what the fuss is all about.
