30+ years ago, I was crossing a street, looked up, & was shocked to see Michael Ironside. I didn't say anything, I just pointed at him in a "Hey, you're that guy" kind of a way and he smiled at me.

I saw an interview with him once where he said his face just isn't built to smile.

He's right.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Is Nicki Minaj posting anti-trans tweets because she genuinely believes it or because she's sucking up to conservatives in the hopes of getting her child rapist brother a pardon? The answer is "who cares, she sucks either way"

The global productivity mystery, where productivity tailed off around 2008 and never recovered, isn't a mystery at all. That's when we all got smartphones and social media in our pockets. Doesn't take Poirot to solve that one.

Oh hey, fuck google. And all of big tech. Fuck them too.
Google is hosting a CBP app that uses facial recognition to identify immigrants, while simultaneously removing apps that report the location of ICE officials because Google sees ICE as a vulnerable group. “Big tech has made their choice.”

If Percy's view of sensible doesn't involve guillotines then we've got a problem here.
Relative independence 😂 yes because the hereditary peers have a real cross section of party affiliation and have no *quite literal* landed interest whatsoever.

Risible stuff.

Mary Shelley doesn't get enough credit for not only anticipating the silver-spooned narcissist techbro who recklessly creates technology without thinking through the consequences, but also for knowing that said techbro would be an absolutely terrible father.

Oh, all you've got to do is relax? That should be easy. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to crawl into a fetal ball in the corner and cry for a few hours.
Don't know where the networking thing started, but here's my lukewarm take - based on a ton of mistakes - for whatever it's worth:
Nobody will give you a job because you bought them a drink.
You can't make people like you, so find people you genuinely like instead. It's a million times easier

I'VE BEEN DOING THIS ALL WRONG
SO, you want to network but don't know where to begin.

1. DON'T. Make friends instead
2. It's not about what they can do for you
3. Famous people are just people first
4. If you do have to gush, don't just say 'i love your work' , pick one thing and say why. Open ended compliments are awkward

To say that AIs can replace human translators is to say that AI can replace human painters and sculptors and singers and poets. It's to assume that AIs as they are currently made and will be made for the foreseeable future can surpass humans in those things which require a soul.

Billionaires threaten this every time something vaguely left-wing is on a ballot (they just finished threatening to leave NYC two months ago), and never understand why, "I, Adolf Bork, inventor of the beloved Dystopia Machine, will reduce my presence in your life forever" doesn't win people over
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

“Rain smacked Los Angeles. It splattered on the palm trees, sizzled on the neon, gurgled down the dirty boulevard. The town was sick. They hadn’t seen sunlight in almost a day. But I had the cure. A fifth of magic and a sack full of cold, hard joy. ‘Ho,’ I said once. It was enough.”
