I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

heed the authors! if you can't afford to order/preorder everything you want to read, present your library with a request for the desired tomes. sure, that will likely take a little longer, but you'll be a hero to others who will also get to enjoy your good taste in reading
Books don't sell nearly as many copies as you think they do. Every sale has significance. This is especially true of preorders and first week of publication orders. These move mountains for authors.

Ontario passed a law starting Jan 2026 that it is illegal for companies to ghost you.

If you have interviewed for a job they are legally required to inform you if they hire someone else or close the position.

The law also requires salary transparency on listings and disclosing use of AI
