The CBS 60 Minutes Doc confirms what we knew: The U.S. is currently using our tax dollars to imprison brown people with no criminal record in torture camps overseas.

It’s no wonder administration shill Bari Weiss pulled this off the air: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjY7...

The full Weiss memo is dogshit
-who cares if administration figures “regret” sending people to CECOT
-who cares about the criminal histories of the people we sent to CECOT, we sent them to a torture prison
—who cares about the “debate” over the legality of sending people to a torture prison

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

And they do this all the time with different things. The "the left is outraged over Sydney Sweeney's jeans ad!" campaign was the same. Right-wing influencers/commentators regularly invent a version of "the left" that doesn't actually exist. And too often, media/mainstream Dems accept that.

Fascinating! -> bucking a multi-decadal decline in Mainline Christian denomination membership, membership in 2 of the traditionally most left-leaning, Quaker and Unitarian, seem to now be increasing in the state of Maine.

These 2 were *never* big, but historically they were heavily influential.

There's a lot of focus on how the dripping antisemitism on the right has created a useful rupture in various parts of Trump's support, and that's true.

But I really worry that EVEN those on the less hateful side of that split are ignoring how dangerous some of these terrorists are.

Incidentally, I am by no means a doomer, but it does feel a little doomy to me that Mitt Romney and Bill Kristol are taking political positions well to the left of the highest-ranking congressional Democrats.
Going back in time to 2009 and telling myself Bill Kristol is the Republican president’s harshest critic and Mitt Romney is begging the government to raise his taxes and watching as 2009 me goes into a coma.

In other words, the research literature suggests a much better basis for modern policy:

1. Labor wealth is a scarce, strategic asset
2. Skilled emigration an *investment* in a global network
3. Aid should help manage, not stop, migration
4. Migration is at the heart of successful development

He should absolutely be fired by NYT for this. Major conflict of interest that he didn't disclose.

This is kind of an aside but TIL that the Vatican didn't erect it's first Christmas tree until the 1982s cause they low key thought it was a protestant kind of pagan thing.
The whole “Christians stole Christmas and Easter” thing really chafes me because:

(1) It’s ahistorical,

(2) Christians don’t even all use the same calendar, and

(3) Sometimes Christians do Christian things for Christian reasons? Can have please just have our holy days?
This is a common idea, but there’s no direct evidence for it.

But there is evidence early Christians thought the dates of Jesus’ conception, birth and death aligned with the spring and winter equinox.

Makes sense if you think Jesus is literally God, right? youtu.be/5lsctaPJSvo?...

Many of the Christmas songs that Miller’s Christian Nationalist pals will be enjoying this season were written by Jewish immigrants who, like Miller’s ancestors, were considered at the time to be unassailable threats to American civilization who should be prevented from becoming Americans.
Stephen Miller's cousin unloads on him:

“We’re Jewish—we grew up knowing how hated we were just for existing. Now he’s trying to take away the exact thing his own family benefited from: that ability to prosper, to build community, to live a rewarding life.”

I really want the Dems to explain what they think this is supposed to accomplish. Because I don't think they know what 230 does, why they even would want to consider it, or what the possible consequences could be. If it is successfully repealed it would prob be a huge disaster.
